Peacock? Beautiful!

There's a house I drive by in the morning that has a complete barnyard... chickens, goats, geese, two peacocks, and whatever wild thing stops in for a meal. It's right smack dab in the middle of a zoned residential area, but nobody seems to mind. It's kind of neat to drive by and see the peacocks perched on top of cars or walking down the sidewalk.

Just a warning to those who might move here. Although we could use more FReepers...

The peacock was a shock to us.

Our master bedroom is on the ground floor and one morning we heard this strange sound coming from the driveway. My husband looked out and said that it was large enough to be a turkey but...

Weeeelll, I love my husband, but a naturalist he is not. I took a peek out the window and saw a peahen! I watched as she ambled across the driveway towards the "up and down" slope (as my kids call it).

I ran to the dining room and peered out of the windows. Lo and behold! Not just one peahean but three with an attendant peacock! I took pictures 'cause I knew no one would believe me.

We'd lived here for nigh on four years and had never seen peacocks roaming through the backyard before. Flocks of wild turkeys, various raptors, and other garden variety birds, but not peacocks.

According to the wildlife rescue place, this habitat is very similar to their native habitat and they are impossible to catch. The SPCA or animal control people will not come out to catch them.

I think that these particular birds belong to someone down the road who uses them as anti-burgling devices.

Around here the early morning fogs start in August, heralding the approach of autumn. (It's not long after that that the spiders grow really large.)

But around December or so we sometimes get freezing fog. That's fog that has been "supercooled" below freezing, but it hasn't turned to ice -- until it hits something like your windshield. Nasty, dangerous stuff.

Well, both my daughter and I will be in swimsuits as we are both participants. My three sons are also swimming in the swimathon

Seriously, is it possible to donate?

Freezing Fog

I get a mental picture of airborne black ice.

This stuff freezes on contact? How do you protect your face, if you have to be out in that stuff?

Did I mentioned that I'm hating you?

My sweet? How can that possibly be! Oh the SHAME of it! The sorrow!

Hmm how this. A home made white chocolate tort followed by a back rub?

Am I forgive yet?

Well, your face is warm enough it's not a problem. But it'll ice up a windshield or cycling goggles pretty fast (back in the days when I was cycle-commuting). A beard too.

My son was three years older and at least a foot taller. She didn't care. Her dad said it would be OK because he couldn't hit her back...he was a guy, after all. I put the brakes the THAT idea!

Sounds perfectly wretched.

I think I'd prefer to visit during "not winter" season.

Freezing fog is pretty rare. At least where I am. Usually it's above freezing, which means the moss can go wild.

Summer is the time to visit. Long evenings -- you can still read a newspaper outside at 10 PM (not that we have any newspapers here worth reading and because of traffic they're now all morning papers). Out in the woods where we live the birds get so noisy at 4:30 AM they'll wake you up.

Gorgeous views, of the Cascades and Olympics, Rainier to the south and Baker to the north.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us Of course, springtime can be fun too. This is not far from my house.
