Peacock? Beautiful!

There's a house I drive by in the morning that has a complete barnyard... chickens, goats, geese, two peacocks, and whatever wild thing stops in for a meal. It's right smack dab in the middle of a zoned residential area, but nobody seems to mind. It's kind of neat to drive by and see the peacocks perched on top of cars or walking down the sidewalk.

The peacock was a shock to us.

Our master bedroom is on the ground floor and one morning we heard this strange sound coming from the driveway. My husband looked out and said that it was large enough to be a turkey but...

Weeeelll, I love my husband, but a naturalist he is not. I took a peek out the window and saw a peahen! I watched as she ambled across the driveway towards the "up and down" slope (as my kids call it).

I ran to the dining room and peered out of the windows. Lo and behold! Not just one peahean but three with an attendant peacock! I took pictures 'cause I knew no one would believe me.

We'd lived here for nigh on four years and had never seen peacocks roaming through the backyard before. Flocks of wild turkeys, various raptors, and other garden variety birds, but not peacocks.

According to the wildlife rescue place, this habitat is very similar to their native habitat and they are impossible to catch. The SPCA or animal control people will not come out to catch them.

I think that these particular birds belong to someone down the road who uses them as anti-burgling devices.
