Washington -- "Armies are fragile institutions and, for all their might, easily broken." Remember those words? They were written here, in this column, at the end of September 2003. I laid out the recipe for how to break a magnificent Army that had taken nearly two decades to rebuild itself in the wake of the Vietnam debacle.
In that early fall two years ago, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld was still running victory laps and the words of his boss, President George W. Bush, were still ringing: "Bring `em on!"
Sadly, those two were, and still are, in charge.
Now they've broken the Army, and after this administration is history, it will take 12 or 15 or 20 years to repair the damage it's inflicted on an institution that our country desperately needs in a century as dangerous as this one......................................

I have always called it that and will always do so, unless in the presence of say... a Naval Officer who is sensitive to such things. :D
They(Army Reserve.) were letting qualified adults skip Boot Camp if my memory serves me correctly.
I suppose prior service such as myself is different and I may have gotten it wrong. If so, I am sorry.
I do know that the Army is emphasizing more combat training for even the support arms.
I am prior service so I don't have to go to Boot Camp but I do have to go to advanced Infantry training when I am ready.
It should be a blast. My physical is next month. I was supposed to attend the WTC (Warrior Transition Course.) for prior service non-army folks but the Guard doesn't have enough slots to justify sending me. That's a shame but the unit I am going to is really good so I think I can get up to speed for AIT.
I think where you served for three years was Bangkok, correct? The place with a million letters for it's name in Thai?.
Thank you for your kind words in your profile about Flight Deck Operations. That is where I spent my enlistment working with VFA-83.
I am going to join a Light Infantry Division. 29th to be specific. I was going to shoot for Officer but I am running out of time due to age so I have to get back into it, at least in a reserve capacity.
I am guessing that you agree with my position that the Army is NOT broken?
I enjoyed your profile and agree with everything in it. I also think it would have been nice if he flew in on a F/A-18C Hornet as well. Nice profile, sir.
It's a shame I have babbled on for so long as I would like to hear your opinion about the changes in the Navy going on. But that's another post and another topic.

Holy Cow! Zotted with no sightings of the kittens whatsoever!
Hmmmmmmmmmmm.....
Recruitment is up across the board.
Training and its Standards are at an all-time high.
Al Queida is constantly changing its Battle Tactics, since the Coalition chooses its Battlefields and not AQ's.
The National Guard have proven time and again that it can ably assist in the prosecution of a "Two-Front War". Or a "Three Front War", if you care to add Kartina into the mix. Something our Military could not due under the previous administration.
The Guard is nice to have around during a Natural Disaster, though its main purpose is national Defense. I thought the Red Cross and FEMA was supposed to have the market cornered on Disasters.
He kinda sounds like Dick Turban tap dancing around topics without offering anything of substance.

SLEEPER TROLLL!!!!!
I can show you other op-eds, even reporting that proves such.
Wow posey, your other op eds may say so but they don't prove anything. David Hackworth was a dropout. According to your standards, he never would have been enlisted. Surprise...you don't have to be phi beta kappa to kill islamofascist's. And there are a bunch out there that need killin.
Hey, let's have a vote on it. The U.S Army is Broken, Worn out. Let's vote on it so I can vote against my own suggestion once again
/Sarcasm off
"We will now be taking in drop-outs, and other low-standards individuals that may or may not meet the same fate as Lindey England."
Whew, at least they're not taking the kids that lie about their age so they can join up like Audie Murphy and my dad did during WWII.
