Soccer: Why is it hated?

Posted on 08/08/2005 11:22:35 AM PDT by onja

mods-If this isn't in the right place please move or cut it.

Why do most Americans hate soccer? It's not just that they don't like it. They are actively against it.

Soccer takes more skill and endurance than the other sports. In middle and high school you take a beating.(Elbowed, tripped, kicked, tackled- All done fairly or behind the ref's back and without body armor) There are many tactics decided by the players(unlike football and baseball). It's a sport many different people can do. Not just people who are huge or work out daily at the gym. Fast people, skilled people, strong people(fullbacks), tall people(goaly), small people, smart people. Footballers don't need much skill. Mainly strength. baseball doesn't need too much skill. Mainly the basics(throwing and catching) and strength. And, seriously, why does everyone think soccer players are gay, weak, etc? They aren't. In middle school half the team played another school sport. All of the highschoolers could easily have played school football or basketball. Out of the hundreds of players I've played I've never seen one who was even acted at all gay.

[[Ride on the freakin' sidewalk if there's traffic, people like me that drive cars (like normal Americans) don't like having to focus so much on some jackhole wearing a yellow spandex suit and "them lil' ol' shorty-shorts." ]]

I'm pretty sure that riding a bike on the sidewalk is illegal. Bikes are supposed to be on the road with traffic.

The best part of a soccer game is the riot afterwards.

Now, overtime silliness can be better described as the NHL's 4-on-4 followed by shootout nonsense.

That just disgusts me. I hate the shootout as it goes against hockey tradition. Hockey is the ultimate TEAM game and for it to be decided on penalty shots is ridiculous. Bettman's ruining the game. I'd rather see the same overtime format as the playoffs. Next goal wins, play till there's a winner. That's the NHL's biggest strength.

I understand the posession trading in NCAA as that doesn't take away the team or game itself from it. The NFL's sudden death oftentimes results in a coin toss winning the game.

soccer is a game where you primarily use half of your body.

True. Legs and lungs alone do not a complete athlete make.

Yellow card, red card . . . what I want to know is if these soccer guys have their green card.

Yes! I really wish the NFL would do something about its overtime rules.

For example, take out the field goal/safety option. First team to score a TD wins the game.

"I'm pretty sure that riding a bike on the sidewalk is illegal."

That site was quoting California law, but I see kids do it all the time in Florida outside my neighborhood. It's safer than riding on the shoulder next to 45-mph traffic.

I believe you ought to be able to use the sidewalks with a non-motorized bike. I just think the idea of mixing full-speed traffic with 15-mph traffic is stupid. (Those bike lanes ought to be for small displacement motorbikes that can't reach highway speeds, and the sidewalks should be for foot and bike traffic.)

Because it is boring as hell and the Euros think a Zero-Zero, 90 minute run around, is fantastic. Sorry. Shorten the field, put in more O. Do away with the stupid off sides rule, same for hockey, and increase the action. 20 guys running up and down kicking the ball back and forth with no chances to score but maybe two or three times in that 90 minutes is very boring. I can see more action watching my neighbor's car rust.

If I'm not mistaken, kids are allowed to ride their bikes on the sidewalk. Adults are not.

Soccer is a great sport to play, but I cannot understand why ANYONE would find it entertaining to watch. To my mind, American football is by far the greatest spectator sport.

Chalk that up to short attention spans. How long is the average play in NFL? I'd guess about 4 - 6 seconds. How long is the average break in between plays? Soccer is non-stop action. No ... it's not high scoring, but then I've seen plenty of 1-0 baseball and hockey games and a few 3-0 NFL games.

Don't get me wrong ... I enjoy American football too, but there's so many annoying things about it (especially the idiot dances for simply doing what they're (over)paid to do ... but that's another story). But is one better than the other? That's a personal opinion.

I will also say that of all the sports I have played in my adult life, the percentage of gay players is definately higher.

Spelling "definitely" with an a is gay too.

LOL..what surprises me is that millions of American kids paly the game at various youth soccer levels..yet they can't attract any crowds for the pro game...I've been to a few WUSA games on LI..pretty good show, and a "nice" ( as in decorum) crowd..

How about Wisconsin, then?

http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/safety/vehicle/bicycle/rules.htm

"General rules:

- Ride at least three feet from the curb or parked vehicles or debris in curb area and in a straight line. Don't swerve in and out around parked vehicles.

- Always ride in the same direction as traffic.

- Sidewalk riding for bicyclists past the learning stage and being closely supervised by adults can be more dangerous than on the road, obeying traffic laws. IT IS ALSO ILLEGAL unless the community has passed an ordinance specifically permitting sidewalk riding. This can be age-restricted, location-restricted or based on the type of property abutting the sidewalk.

- Obey all traffic laws.

- Be predictable! Let other users know where you intend to go and maintain an understood course.

It is really amazing how many people think that bikes are supposed to stay off the road and ride on sidewalks. Please, everyone, learn the rules of the road for your state so that you can be an informed, safe driver and/or cyclist.

Soccer takes more skill and endurance than the other sports.

Endurance? Yes. Skill? No way in heck. I played on a soccer team two years ago. I was litteraly the worst guy on the team. Over the course of seven games I played about 1 hour and scored two goals. I was tied with two of the best guys on the team for most goals scored. Soccer does not take much skill. Soccer takes more skill and endurance than the other sports.
Footballers don't need much skill.

You make zero sense

baseball doesn't need too much skill.

Wrong. Anyone can kick a ball through a huge goal. Not many can hit a 85 MPH ball the size of your fist.

And, seriously, why does everyone think soccer players are gay? They aren't

Coulda fooled me. Let my introduce you to Mr. Beckham:

High school and middle school games are much more active with strategies, skill, and a good mix of passing and one-on-one.

Let's talk about football. First the Quarterback. You, like all the players on offense, have to memorize a playbook with several thousand plays. You have to be able to throw a ball perfectly, within an area of about 12 square inches, fourty yards down field with a 250 pound monster flying at you. Reciever- you have to know all the plays, knowing how many yards down field you have to run how fast, and then you have to be able to jump up, catch a ball, and then a split second later get slamed by a hugh guy who trying to knock you senseless so you drop the ball. Soccer is GAY
