Cash is good, but the gift card shows that you actually put some thought into the gift rather than as an afterthought. :-D

Most malls sell SIMON gift cards (has a VISA logo on it). You can use those cards just about anywhere since it's treated like a pre-paid credit card.

I've got a 13-yr-old and the gifts he likes the best are 1) cash and 2) gift certificates for places like Best Buy and Wal-Mart where he can put the money towards music cds, movies, video games, etc.

I just got back from walking my dog. There were a pacel of little girls out playing in the hose at a house nearby. My, that looked good. It's been about 100 years since I did that. I wanted to join them. I was just yesterday thinking about taking my dog outside and hosing him off. I should do that. I probably will. It's that time of year.

An 11-year-old girl is in that "too old for toys, too young for boys" stage. I'd get her something a little grown up like a pretty bracelet or a gift cert to the mall. I think it's nice that you ask. Good luck!

My niece is 11 and she loves to get gift cards for stores like Gap Kids or Limited Two. You might also get her a gift card at some place like Best Buy where she could pick out a CD or DVD she wants.

A pair of binoculars and a small book on stargazing and astronomy in general. You might awaken an interest in science. If you shop around you might be able to do it for $20 or $30. Don't bother with those skinny little refracting telescopes on the flimsy mounts. They have turned off more kids than turned on. Binoculars of 40mm objective or 50mm if you can swing it are more than adequate. The magnification is usually in the 8x-10x range and that is perfect for most casual astronomy.

I always bought books. My daughter got Audubon bird books, flower books, tree books, you name it. She still has them, today. Don't waste money on stuff that is gonna be garbage before the first set of batteries goes dead.
The best thing you can ever pass down is knowledge, and curiousity.

I have a niece about that age. She always asks for art supplies. I collect stuff on sale, ect and put it in a plastic 'envelope' (for case files) and send it along. The envelope is so all the little markers and crayons and paper have a home when her mom wants it all cleaned up.

There are a few threads about C.S. Lewis books "The Chronicles of Narnia." You could find out from her mom if she has read them. If not the first book is The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
I have been thinking about getting it for my daughter. I never read them when I was a kid. It might be a good gift. Failing that, a gift certificate to Amazon.com is good for her to pick out her own book or DVD.
