information needed about 1st gun purchase

Posted on 05/15/2005 8:37:08 PM PDT by rosy_toes

I am a US citizen & my British husband is a lawful, DOCUMENTED, permanent resident (he has to wait another 17 months before he can become a citizen). We want to buy a handgun, for personal safety in our home. Does anyone know; would the fact that he is not yet a citizen effect us getting a gun?

I have a CRAZY relative (brother), who has sworn to kill me (he attacked me at Christmas, breaking 2 of my fingers, giving me a fat lip & black eye - yet, believe it or not, when Police arrived, I WAS ARRESTED, apparently because I was crying & upset - he DEMANDED the DA take me to trail, but thank God a jury of my peers saw the injustice & aquitted me of all charges).

He was really pissed that I was aquitted & has now (5 months later) gone so far as to say, to a friend, that he could get to me, in my home, 1 late night & strangle me to death, long before the police could arrive to help me (we live in the country & my husband works nights every 2 months - which he knows).

The Judge that presided over my case, was outraged that the DA further victimised me & that I was the real VICTIM. She also knew that [he] is a very serious risk to me, so she asked me after the verdict was read, if I wanted her to issue a restraining order to protect myself, which of course I did/do (this I am told is VERY unusual for a presiding Judge to ask me if I wanted RO) - but I know that this piece of paper will not stop him from killing me, if & when he should decide to.

[His] recent comments (2 weeks ago) about breaking in to my house & strangling me, has now convinced me that I MUST take some steps to protect myself & my family (I have a 1 yr old, 3 yr old & 5 yr old), but I know nothing of guns & I have no idea where to go to find out. I want to be able to trust the sources in which I get the informtion, because I am such a novice.

I love & trust this website & forum, so I thought that my fellow Republicans could help me. I am really scared. He is HUGE (outwieghs me by 250 pounds), he was in the Marines for 2 years in the 80's (although he was asked to leave, or be thrown out for pulling a gun on a Master SGT).

I have ordered pepper spray (for BEAR, because he is the size of a bear) to use for protection, until I am able to get some information about buying a gun and make a purchase.

I live in Washington State - PLEASE HELP ME, I don't know where else to turn.

Check out http://www.packing.org .

That site has the latest gun laws and concealed carry license information.

First gun: A .357 Magnum Revolver. Hollow point cartridges.
A .357 will stop a bear or a 350 pounder on crack.

If you are an American citizen with no felony convictions and handgun ownership is not against the law in your state, it doesn't matter if your husband is not yet a citizen, YOU can get a gun. I suggest you do though I certainly hope you never need it.

I could not have said it better myself.

I am a male, own a 3" 44 special, multiple .357's, and 2 .45 acp's. I consider the 44 special to be a fairly hard recoiling revolver, and really not very powerful in terms of foot pounds of energy. The 357 mag is about the same in recoil, and much more powerful. The 45ACP seems to recoil less because it is a Semi-auto pistol, not a revolver, and on a par with the 357 in power.

BUT, since you seem to be skilled with your 44, I am darn sure not going to argue. I do believe that you might like to try out the new .45GAP, a semi-auto pistol, in either Glock or Springfield Armory. They have less recoil than the 45acp, and if you can handle a 44 special, you can handle a .45gap faster. Especially on sight recovery after the first shot.

I agree that she should be, and has been honestly and legitamately answered. Should not be Zotted yet. I just don't recall of any adult brother perpetuating harm on his sister- have never heard of this. Hubbies, Ex'es, boyfriends, fathers, yes.

Flame throwers take no license?

In general no although local requirements may vary.

Exactly.
My first and last choice, despite the howls of our automatic loving brothers.

It ALWAYS fires. It always hurts... on both ends.
And with a hotload or special jacketed projectile... momma!

You can drive nails with it too.

damn fine, serviceable revolver...
fired a glock, a colt and sig sauer semi auto.

I prefer the 357 magnum to almost any handgun out there...

It doesn't bounce... and it has all kinds of power.
GREAT recommendation travis.
great

to answer [your] question, no I was not frightened off, but as I stated earlier, I have 3 children & needed to get them fed, bathed & in bed (my husband is on nights at the moment).

As for the statements about me registering today & posting today; I would like to say in my defense, I have been visiting & reading postings on this website for about 7 months, but up until now, I did not have anything to post.

As for the little coments about me being 'real', there are several Republican websites, in which I am a member & I am a active participant in political alerts sent to me by several sites, including fairus.org. I am a friend of Minnie Knych (GOP), Mary Jane Aurdal (Bush 2nd Congressional Chair) & Darcy Cheeseman (GOP) (all which you can easily verify)+ I was a very active in Bush's re-election campaign and PROUD OF IT!!!!!!! I even received a letter, from the President thanking me for my help, mailed from Crawford, which is framed & hangs beside my desk. Besides, what possible motive could I have for lying or pretending to be a Republican?

As for 'there being more to the story', as with all these situations, of course there are many more details - I was trying to explain, as condensed as possible, why I now felt the need to get a gun. I was only told of [his] latest 'strangling' threat yesterday, so I felt that it prudent that I start trying to get some advice. Just for the record, 1 of the 2 Policeman testified that he did not believe I should have been arrested, but that is wasnt his call to make. I really don't care if you believe me, I AM telling the truth & a jury of my peers agreed.

I HAVE spoken with Law Enforcement and they said if he contacts me or comes to the house, call & they will arrest him - I doubt however, they would be giving me valueable advice on which handgun to buy & where I can learn to use it with lethal accuracy, what do you think?

As for 'Bear' pepper spray, for your information, they do here on the West coast, offer pepper spray, for use against large animals, like bears. I figured, in the dark, I might just miss his face, if I use the traditional type, so I have opted for the bear spray, which forms a huge cloud.

Oh, Flashbunny - I didnt have a personal relationship with the 'Helpful Judge' - somehow, I think that asking this Judge, no matter how outraged she was about my treatment by the DA, in court what gun to buy & where to learn to shot with deadly accuracy, probably, I mean I'm not sure, probably, would be a violation of her position (just a guess). As for my lawyer (public defender), she's the one that suggested I buy a gun.

I would however, like to thank everyone that gave me advice, rather than insulted me. I really don't know where to go for advice in these matters, hell, I never thought I would need to know - I THOUGHT this would be a great place for help, because I have seen many like-minded people on this website. I thought here, a website which celebrates our right to bear arms, would be a good place to start. I thought it would give me the opportunity to hear from several people regarding this issue, okay in hindsight, maybe I should have kept my reasons for needing the gun to myself & not revealed them here - point taken, I appologize.

I don't think a shotgun would work, because I think he would be in my room, by the time I was able to get my gun & I think, although I am not sure, that kind of gun is for distance shooting.

I did however find a few really helpful sites about deciding which gun to buy. Thank you so much ccmay, your links were great, although, I don't think I would ever carry it outside my house, so a permit isn't needed. There were many of you who defended me & for that I am grateful.

I think I have decided on a 9mm and have some good ideas of where to go to learn to shoot. One of the sites, which I learned a LOT from is http://www.craigcentral.com/handguns.asp & http://www.cashpawn.net/howtobuy.html

I will keep checking back for any more advice, because I really do think I will learn a lot from Freerepublic members.

Well, since you've been lurking, you know all about the daily influx of trolls, so, if you would be so kind as to not take offense...we would appreciate it.

Welcome aboard.

I haven't been lurking; after I got all my kids in bed, had a glass of wine and watched Law & Order, I came down to see if anyone had posted anything (thinking there may be 1 or 2) - you can imagine my shock when I saw 253 posts.

I then began reading them, looking for advice, websites and helpful comments - I certainly wasn't prepared for some of the postings - especially the White Trash comment (what a &*&^%$%$@#$ insecure little man), I did not deserve that.

I came here looking for help, I THOUGHT I would get that, I certainly did not expect to be abused. I turned to this website, because I was familiar with the site and forum. I was emailed articles and posts on the site, running up to the election, as I was very actively involved in the Bush campaign. I said I loved & trusted the site, because I read so much great stuff here, during the election - I trusted [you] because I thought this was a website of people like me, that shared mostly the same opinions & values as myself.

Despite some of the awful stuff said here to me, I have learned a great deal, got some really great website links (which I have learned a lot from) and got some really great opinions/advice on guns. The person that said I should have gone elsewhere for this advice, is probably, in hind sight, correct - I just wasnt sure where to go.

I would like to make a quick comment on a point made here by a couple of different people; what harm was it to give me the benefit of the doubt, give me a few hours to respond before insulting me and calling me names? I would never write some of the awful stuff that was posted to me, even if I KNEW the person was lying. I needed advice, not insults. Oh yes, one more thing; as for my husband protecting me - of course he would protect me & the children IF HE WAS HERE TO PROTECT US. He can't go over to my brother's house & attack him, he would then be deported back to England. In 1 yr, 7 months, once he is a full citizen, then he could do something, without fear of deportation. We have worked so hard to get here, to buy the house of our dreams & I refuse to allow my brother to ruin our lives and destroy everything that we have worked so hard for. There is a very good chance that my brother will do nothing, but after what happened at Christmas, I am not SURE of what he is capable of - he's nuts. I decided, I am tried of being the victim, I want to make sure I know what I am going to do, if he does ever decide to make good on his threats.

You say you felt abused, well, some of us may have felt abused after your vanity. If you are legit and I am still not convinced you are, I will apologise but the amount of trolls through here lately has been immense. Maybe you are just naive, but you must agree your article is classic troll bait.

"How did you know it was for BEAR? Did it have a picture of a BEAR on the can?"

One can buy pepper spray designed to deal with a bear from hiking magazines and sporting supply stores. It seems to me that the only spray that would be effective against a bear, however, would be at least .44mag.

How is it possible that someone could post a vanity up to 11:30 PM on sunday the 15th EST and have a sign up date of may the 16th. Inquiring minds want to know since many here question rosy_toes sincerity.
