information needed about 1st gun purchase

Posted on 05/15/2005 8:37:08 PM PDT by rosy_toes

I am a US citizen & my British husband is a lawful, DOCUMENTED, permanent resident (he has to wait another 17 months before he can become a citizen). We want to buy a handgun, for personal safety in our home. Does anyone know; would the fact that he is not yet a citizen effect us getting a gun?

I have a CRAZY relative (brother), who has sworn to kill me (he attacked me at Christmas, breaking 2 of my fingers, giving me a fat lip & black eye - yet, believe it or not, when Police arrived, I WAS ARRESTED, apparently because I was crying & upset - he DEMANDED the DA take me to trail, but thank God a jury of my peers saw the injustice & aquitted me of all charges).

He was really pissed that I was aquitted & has now (5 months later) gone so far as to say, to a friend, that he could get to me, in my home, 1 late night & strangle me to death, long before the police could arrive to help me (we live in the country & my husband works nights every 2 months - which he knows).

The Judge that presided over my case, was outraged that the DA further victimised me & that I was the real VICTIM. She also knew that [he] is a very serious risk to me, so she asked me after the verdict was read, if I wanted her to issue a restraining order to protect myself, which of course I did/do (this I am told is VERY unusual for a presiding Judge to ask me if I wanted RO) - but I know that this piece of paper will not stop him from killing me, if & when he should decide to.

[His] recent comments (2 weeks ago) about breaking in to my house & strangling me, has now convinced me that I MUST take some steps to protect myself & my family (I have a 1 yr old, 3 yr old & 5 yr old), but I know nothing of guns & I have no idea where to go to find out. I want to be able to trust the sources in which I get the informtion, because I am such a novice.

I love & trust this website & forum, so I thought that my fellow Republicans could help me. I am really scared. He is HUGE (outwieghs me by 250 pounds), he was in the Marines for 2 years in the 80's (although he was asked to leave, or be thrown out for pulling a gun on a Master SGT).

I have ordered pepper spray (for BEAR, because he is the size of a bear) to use for protection, until I am able to get some information about buying a gun and make a purchase.

I live in Washington State - PLEASE HELP ME, I don't know where else to turn.

This explanation changes all of my prior opinions abt your situation. I was for some reason assuming an urban, self defense against people only situation. I now agree completely with her choice.

Some people do find a detached viewpoint helpful - there's less subjectivity involved. On the other hand, some people just have nowhere to turn for any number of reasons - new to an area, lousy family, etc. Count your blessings. :-)

In any case, please remember where to send the royalty check after you un-toxicate.

The Elgin Police Department is investigating whether its 911 operators and possibly police officers believed a call from a 19-year-old man who had been kidnapped and locked in the trunk of a car was a prank, Elgin police said Saturday.

Elgin Community College student David Steeves was found shot to death in the trunk of his mother's car in Rockford a week later.

It's in Illinois -- it may be near Chicago, that I don't know.

It is in Kane Co., I believe a little ways WNW of Chicago, probably in it's urban sprawl. My father was born there. Thanks for the link.

OK, the floor is yours - can you fill in the answers for me?

I mean, please... Would you deprive a fellow freeper of knowing what sort of horrible fate awaits if we continue to be so blind to the incessant prodding of trolls?

Royaly, shmoiltry. I'm a sucker for second-ammendment-sisters. You girls rock. My state (Calif) has Yosemite, the Beaches, the Wine Country, and is home to Free Republic dot com. I'll not whine nor send royalty checks 'till the governator falls under pressure from the unions and bureaucracy that run this state.

Consider the check in the mail.

Don't get out to other boards much, eh?

What happens when you coddle trolls?

You get more trolls.

It's happened on several boards where they 'erred on the side of caution' by being nice to the trolls. It becomes a troll fest - and the good people started leaving in droves. Which just leaves you with trolls and the people who think it's a good idea to let trolls play on the boards.

It's a no-win situation.

I am a female...and I own a .44 special. I took first in the revolver class of our local self defense session the first time I took that particular weapon to the range!

flame throwers are farming implements. No license involved, although it may vary on a state by state / locality basis.

If hubby has a valid green card he can buy a firearm same as any other legal buyer who can pass the yellow sheet test (4473)......this question was asked a while ago here at FR . I asked a local dealer and that was his answer.

What style or kind of handgun are you thinking of buying as a first choice if ya don't mind me asking ?

A policy that makes sense when speaking of posters who come here to argue against our positions. That isn't what happened here. A question was posed that in no way questioned conservative principles or Free Republic rules.

I think we all agree, that there is a pretty high probability that rosy is not genuine, but my point was merely, that while expresing legitimate doubts, there is no harm in giving her common sense advice, just on that very small probability that her question was genuine.

If it wasn't, well, the troll can just see what a helpful bunch of people we are.

One does indeed wonder how she found FR, if she doesn't have enough sense to inquire at the right places, and a lot of the story is peculiar, such as why would they arrest her, if her brother was beating her up and so on.

I think if she is a troll, she may have been expecting FReepers to jump and suggest violence, as in going and preemptively terminating her violent brother. Instead, FReepers acted very responsively in giving her legal, reasonable, helpful advice.

So -- troll or not, no harm done, whatever the original intent may have been.
