I am a US citizen & my British husband is a lawful, DOCUMENTED, permanent resident (he has to wait another 17 months before he can become a citizen). We want to buy a handgun, for personal safety in our home. Does anyone know; would the fact that he is not yet a citizen effect us getting a gun?
I have a CRAZY relative (brother), who has sworn to kill me (he attacked me at Christmas, breaking 2 of my fingers, giving me a fat lip & black eye - yet, believe it or not, when Police arrived, I WAS ARRESTED, apparently because I was crying & upset - he DEMANDED the DA take me to trail, but thank God a jury of my peers saw the injustice & aquitted me of all charges).
He was really pissed that I was aquitted & has now (5 months later) gone so far as to say, to a friend, that he could get to me, in my home, 1 late night & strangle me to death, long before the police could arrive to help me (we live in the country & my husband works nights every 2 months - which he knows).
The Judge that presided over my case, was outraged that the DA further victimised me & that I was the real VICTIM. She also knew that [he] is a very serious risk to me, so she asked me after the verdict was read, if I wanted her to issue a restraining order to protect myself, which of course I did/do (this I am told is VERY unusual for a presiding Judge to ask me if I wanted RO) - but I know that this piece of paper will not stop him from killing me, if & when he should decide to.
[His] recent comments (2 weeks ago) about breaking in to my house & strangling me, has now convinced me that I MUST take some steps to protect myself & my family (I have a 1 yr old, 3 yr old & 5 yr old), but I know nothing of guns & I have no idea where to go to find out. I want to be able to trust the sources in which I get the informtion, because I am such a novice.
I love & trust this website & forum, so I thought that my fellow Republicans could help me. I am really scared. He is HUGE (outwieghs me by 250 pounds), he was in the Marines for 2 years in the 80's (although he was asked to leave, or be thrown out for pulling a gun on a Master SGT).
I have ordered pepper spray (for BEAR, because he is the size of a bear) to use for protection, until I am able to get some information about buying a gun and make a purchase.
I live in Washington State - PLEASE HELP ME, I don't know where else to turn.
I suggest you do though I certainly hope you never need it.
you could also get a tazer, as far as i know your husband should not be a problem if you are the one getting the gun, it probably depends on local laws. While you are waiting maybe a friend who has a gun could come and stay at your house.

The first thing you need to do is get a restraining order against your brother. Then you need to get several pepper spray canisters and carry one with a few stashed in different places. What state do you live in?
you should buy and register the handgun yourself Rosy.
Then , if you aren't familiar with firearms , sign up at the local range for training and range time experience.
Then put a lawyer on retainer in advance , if you haven't already....
Never-the-less, a shotgun with #6 shot is the best choice if you feel the need to defend yourself indoors with deadly force.
probably would be a good idea to get some training on how to properly use a gun (and stuff like cleaning it etc) especially if you have never used one before.

Very interesting first post. Your story is compelling, and yet, HE beat you up, and YOU were sent to jail? That tells me there may be more to it than what you are saying. Not trying to insult you, I'm just the suspicious type, I guess.
You should definitely contact a lawyer or a law enforcement person.
a shotgun would be good, but a handgun is more versatile
Have your husband go to a legitimate gun store and ask.
I think a legal permanent resident basically has all the rights as a citizen, except being able to vote.
Since you were acquitted, I think you are also able to buy a gun.
I don't know the laws of Washington State, but, a legitimate gun store would have you fill out the proper paperwork, do the checks and after the waiting period, allow you to buy a gun.
I would highly recommend, that you also take some basic class in gun safety and how to handle it. It's important, so that you don't shoot someone by accident and I would suggest you get a security system -- it's much better to prevent your brother from getting in, rather than try to defend yourself and then have to try to convince a judge it was self defense.
