information needed about 1st gun purchase

Posted on 05/15/2005 8:37:08 PM PDT by rosy_toes

I am a US citizen & my British husband is a lawful, DOCUMENTED, permanent resident (he has to wait another 17 months before he can become a citizen). We want to buy a handgun, for personal safety in our home. Does anyone know; would the fact that he is not yet a citizen effect us getting a gun?

I have a CRAZY relative (brother), who has sworn to kill me (he attacked me at Christmas, breaking 2 of my fingers, giving me a fat lip & black eye - yet, believe it or not, when Police arrived, I WAS ARRESTED, apparently because I was crying & upset - he DEMANDED the DA take me to trail, but thank God a jury of my peers saw the injustice & aquitted me of all charges).

He was really pissed that I was aquitted & has now (5 months later) gone so far as to say, to a friend, that he could get to me, in my home, 1 late night & strangle me to death, long before the police could arrive to help me (we live in the country & my husband works nights every 2 months - which he knows).

The Judge that presided over my case, was outraged that the DA further victimised me & that I was the real VICTIM. She also knew that [he] is a very serious risk to me, so she asked me after the verdict was read, if I wanted her to issue a restraining order to protect myself, which of course I did/do (this I am told is VERY unusual for a presiding Judge to ask me if I wanted RO) - but I know that this piece of paper will not stop him from killing me, if & when he should decide to.

[His] recent comments (2 weeks ago) about breaking in to my house & strangling me, has now convinced me that I MUST take some steps to protect myself & my family (I have a 1 yr old, 3 yr old & 5 yr old), but I know nothing of guns & I have no idea where to go to find out. I want to be able to trust the sources in which I get the informtion, because I am such a novice.

I love & trust this website & forum, so I thought that my fellow Republicans could help me. I am really scared. He is HUGE (outwieghs me by 250 pounds), he was in the Marines for 2 years in the 80's (although he was asked to leave, or be thrown out for pulling a gun on a Master SGT).

I have ordered pepper spray (for BEAR, because he is the size of a bear) to use for protection, until I am able to get some information about buying a gun and make a purchase.

I live in Washington State - PLEASE HELP ME, I don't know where else to turn.

I hope you have a couple of mean land fierce large dogs that you keep with you at all times.
And I would think about moving to where he could not find you.

How come my cat keeps beating up all the dogs and other cats in this house lately??? HMMMMMM??????

Because the natural order of things was reversed when we trained dogs not to attack kitty. My cat takes advantage of it too ;~D

We didn't lose anything -- it's better to try to help someone, even if they don't deserve it, than to become so cynical, that we don't help out someone who may actually need it.

Y'know, I've stumbled upon a few threads here that have attracted the Cult of the Highly Suspicious and Overtly Paranoid, and I still can't find a good explanation for the harm that may be done here by answering a question as though the writer were being sincere. The only real complaint was the "waste of bandwidth" - this from people who hijack a thread like this with their delusions of infiltration and turn it into an inane 1000-post-plus chat session.

(Shrugging)

Exactly. Good advice is still good advice when someone searches for it later, whether this person was real or not.

I swear last night he was on a rampage, none of the animals was safe. I had to pick him up and coddle him so the other four legged friends could get some peace.

Yes but if you look through the posts, there is quite a bit of sound information.

Yeah, me, too - think I might keep it to use in ZOT threads; lends a certain dignity that cats in Viking helmets just doesn't do, somehow...

PB, I'm just sayin'.. If my brother threatened me or the kids, my husband would kick his ass. End of story. The brother would be looking on the internet to find a new set of balls to wear to his senior prom.

I agree. I could not imagine my getting my husband a can of mace to protect me and my kids from my brother. I would have kept it from myself instead. He would rip my brother a new one. Her story sounds scripted.

I'm not questioning FO, but the media might've twisted things quite a bit. More to that story for sure. Guaranteed.. Somethin' is missing. That story most likely would've gone national. Like the guy that recently took the call from the mother that couldn't control her 12 year old daughter. But, it's really more than that. That 911 dispatcher would've been in deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep guano.

Say I have the same problem, or a similar one. Even though I have been a member for a few years, and as much as I love FR and my FRiends here, FR wouldn't be where I'd go for advice about a BIL who was trying to kill me.

I come here for the news, for interaction with others on the issues of the day, the humor or a good ZOT once in awhile, but not for advice on life's problems.

Where's a sniff-o-meter when you need one?

LOL .... My thoughts exactly after a short, partial read. If we are right, I'm finally in before the Zot. If I'm wrong (I doubt it) then I apologise.
