information needed about 1st gun purchase

Posted on 05/15/2005 8:37:08 PM PDT by rosy_toes

I am a US citizen & my British husband is a lawful, DOCUMENTED, permanent resident (he has to wait another 17 months before he can become a citizen). We want to buy a handgun, for personal safety in our home. Does anyone know; would the fact that he is not yet a citizen effect us getting a gun?

I have a CRAZY relative (brother), who has sworn to kill me (he attacked me at Christmas, breaking 2 of my fingers, giving me a fat lip & black eye - yet, believe it or not, when Police arrived, I WAS ARRESTED, apparently because I was crying & upset - he DEMANDED the DA take me to trail, but thank God a jury of my peers saw the injustice & aquitted me of all charges).

He was really pissed that I was aquitted & has now (5 months later) gone so far as to say, to a friend, that he could get to me, in my home, 1 late night & strangle me to death, long before the police could arrive to help me (we live in the country & my husband works nights every 2 months - which he knows).

The Judge that presided over my case, was outraged that the DA further victimised me & that I was the real VICTIM. She also knew that [he] is a very serious risk to me, so she asked me after the verdict was read, if I wanted her to issue a restraining order to protect myself, which of course I did/do (this I am told is VERY unusual for a presiding Judge to ask me if I wanted RO) - but I know that this piece of paper will not stop him from killing me, if & when he should decide to.

[His] recent comments (2 weeks ago) about breaking in to my house & strangling me, has now convinced me that I MUST take some steps to protect myself & my family (I have a 1 yr old, 3 yr old & 5 yr old), but I know nothing of guns & I have no idea where to go to find out. I want to be able to trust the sources in which I get the informtion, because I am such a novice.

I love & trust this website & forum, so I thought that my fellow Republicans could help me. I am really scared. He is HUGE (outwieghs me by 250 pounds), he was in the Marines for 2 years in the 80's (although he was asked to leave, or be thrown out for pulling a gun on a Master SGT).

I have ordered pepper spray (for BEAR, because he is the size of a bear) to use for protection, until I am able to get some information about buying a gun and make a purchase.

I live in Washington State - PLEASE HELP ME, I don't know where else to turn.

First of all, if I had a crazy brother after me, I wouldn't go on the web looking for answers I could get from every policeman on the corner.

I'd arm myself by hook or by crook and protect my family. Heck, her husband sounds stout enough to stop a charging rhino.

The whole thing doesn't ring right.

First, try to get a restraining order against this nut. Second, if the laws are such that you can't get a gun, to hell with them. If this idiot ever comes in to attack you, better to have an "illegal firearm" under your bed than a pool of your own blood.

Oh good grief we are paranoid about trolls nowadays.

If this is a trolling post, all she's found out so far is that many freepers answer without knowing the answer, and half of them are paranoid about infiltration.

This ~should~ be a question we should all be able to answer no matter who asks it... there's some embarrassment.

Rosy toes... I am also a woman in WA. Washington has very good gun law, and is a shall-issue state for concealed carry. I recommend a friend (or paid instructor if you don't have one) and a day of shooting as a first step with a few different types of guns. I recommend a revolver for a first gun... a nice heavy .357 with a medium length barrel, not a light stubby pocket gun. The vital thing is that it's comfortable to shoot and you can what you want to hit with it. I also recommend a book In the Gravest Extreme - Role of the Firearm in Personal Protection by Massad F. Ayoob. It's a very fast read, won't slow you down a bit in getting a gun, but will help begin to train your mind.

Assuming that you are legitimate (a big assumption at this point) with a 1, 3 and 5 year old, you can't leave a gun where it is accessible. You'll either have to keep it in a safe, or use an effective lock on it. So if you need it in a hurry, you'll need to invest in a fairly sophisticated storage system.

That being said, your story doesn't pass the smell test.

..I live in Washington State.

Despite the fact that a few counties in Washington State are pure liberal evil, it is a gun friendly state. If YOU are a legal citizen and resident of Washington State, then you should have no problem in getting a Concealed Carry Permit. My wife and I have had one for 30+ years.

I who believe in just about everybody's sincerity, find the profile of rosy_toes exceedingly fishy.

Rosy,

There have been many helpful and guiding responses thus far, in lightning fast time I might add.. (impressive too!). Has that helped?

"But I think she is still within that reasonable doubt area."

The longer rosy refuses to respond to anyone, the more it smells funny. Forgive me if I am wrong.

OK. I really do NOT trust you.

But. On the strange chance you're telling the truth, and we've scared you off, there's some good advice on this thread. I'd like to offer another tidbit. Find a range in your area, TOMORROW. Make an appointment for one-on-one lessons. Learn to shoot well. Get comfy with a gun and purchase one post haste. Lock it well so as to protect the children.

And get a restraining order, etc., etc., etc.....

That said......you'd BEST start answering these posts.

Quite frankly, you meet my criteria for a gladhander troll, especially with this profile:

Member since: May 16, 2005

I am a 34, almost 35 year old mother of 3 - a 5 1/2 year old boy, 3 1/2 year old girl & a 1 year old little boy.

I lived in London, England for 12 1/2 years, with my English husband.

I love my country with all my heart, I love the Military with all my heart & I love George W. Bush, with all my heart.

I think George W. Bush is the best thing to happen to this country in a VERY long time.

I hate the Clintons and find most liberals to be blind, hate-filled, fools & idiots, not all, but most.

I watch FOX news exclusively, they are the only TV news channel I trust.

Waaaay over the top.

Get a shotgun (as others have suggested) and forget the rest. You have a right to self-defense. Learn how to use it.

It matters not whether the perpetrator is your relative or some crackhead, if your life is in danger, defend it. Otherwise, it isn't worth much.

She should have stood her ground if she was in earnest. She fled. When I was new, I mean really new, I stood my ground to the point the moderator told me to knock it off. I took my licks from all of them, and I'm still here. She sounds like a phoney IMHO.
