Pass It On

Read:

Getting older doesn't mean becoming obsolete. It can mean growing, maturing, serving, ministering, venturing, enjoying ourselves to the end of our days. "Old men ought to be explorers," author T. S. Eliot said. One of my friends says, "Have a blast while you last."

To idle away our last years is to rob ourselves of what could be the best years of our lives and to deprive the church of gifts God has given to enrich it. There is still service to be rendered and there are victories to be won.

Some older folks may not have the energy or inclination for leadership, but they are an invaluable asset to the next generation of leaders. John Wesley was asked what he would do if he knew he had only a short time to live. He responded, "I should meet with my young men till the moment came that I was called to yield my spirit back to Him that gave it."

The psalmist also desired to pass along his understanding of the Lord to others, and he prayed, "When I am old and grayheaded, O God, do not forsake me, until I declare Your strength to this generation" (Psalm 71:18).

We too should remain open to being used by God to enrich others' lives. Our greatest usefulness may be to pass our understanding of God on to others. -David Roper

To forget the elderly is to ignore the wisdom of the years.

Charlotte Bronte (1816-1855), English writer noted for her novel Jane Eyre (1847), sister of Anne Bronte and Emily Bronte. The three sisters are almost as famous for their short, tragic lives as for their novels. In the past 40 years Charlotte Brontë's reputation has risen rapidly, and feminist criticism has done much to show that she was speaking up for oppressed women of every age.

The collection of poems, Poems By Currer, Ellis And Acton Bell (1846), which Charlotte wrote with her sisters, sold only two copies. By this time she had finished a novel, The Professor, but it never found a publisher during her lifetime. Undeterred by this rejection, Charlotte began Jane Eyre, which appeared in 1847 and became an immediate success. The heroine is a penniless orphan who becomes a teacher, obtains a post as a governess, inherits money from an uncle, and marries the Byronic hero in the end.

Although her identity was now well known, Charlotte continued to publish as Currer Bell. Jane Eyre was followed by Shirley (1848) and Vilette (1853). In Jane Eyre Charlotte used her experiences at the Evangelical school and as governess. The novel severely criticized the limited options open to educated but impoverished women. The title character from Shirley was an attempted ideal portrait of Emily. Shirley was one of the first fully developed independent, brave, outspoken heroines in English literature.

Late last month we saw the beavers finish their dam
Below the Old Grain Mill.
They trimmed and laced branches and sticks.
Mixed in lots of mud and slivers of brick.
And created a marvel that work with Nature's Will.

But for a week the rain fell down.
Not torrents, but loud on the ground.
As the dam held back the Mill's water.
And gained just so much more.

No one expected it to happen.
The rain was surely not caught nappin'.
Now the bottom of the valley is a lake
With a half hour's swim from shore to shore.
And all the landmarks we've gnawed are hidden from view!

I thought we made the marks up high enough.
But no one figured on so much wet stuff.
And our directions really are a mess.
So, the way to Amy's Place is anyone's guess!

But I smell Kettle Corn hot from popping.
And a sweet deliciously sticky topping.
Wafting from the shallow reedy Eastern glade.
The sun is up and not soon to fade.
Making my task so much simpler than it Otter!
