I Heard a Bird Sing
By Oliver Herford
I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December
A magical thing
And sweet to remember.
'We are nearer to Spring
Than we were in September,
I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December.

Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells, across the snow:
The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true.

New Years resolutions we can keep..
Are you sick of making the same resolutions year after year that you never keep? Why not promise to do something you can actually accomplish? Here are some resolutions that you can use as a starting point:
1. I want to gain weight. Put on at least 30 pounds.
2. Stop exercising. Waste of time.
3. Read less.
4. Watch more TV. I've been missing some good stuff.
5. Procrastinate more.
6. Drink. Drink some more.
7. Take up a new habit: smoking.
8. Spend at least $1000 a month on Ladies of the Night.
9. Spend more time at work.
10. Take a vacation to someplace important: like to see the largest ball of twine.
11. Stop bringing lunch from home: I should eat out more.
12. Quit giving money & time to charity.
14. Start being superstitious.
15. Have my car lowered and invest in a really loud stereo system. Get the windows tinted. Buy some fur for the dash.
16. Speak in a monotone voice and only use monosyllabic words.
17. Only wear jeans that are 2 sizes too small and use a chain or rope for a belt. Only wear white T-shirts with those fashionable yellow stains under the arms.
18. Personal goal: bring back disco.

Good morning to y'all
By the shores of Gitchee Gummee
Wait a minute, thats been done
Longfellows estate is sure to sue me
If I plagiarize that one
I could do one
About the midnight sun
And the men who moil for gold
The cadence and rhyme
Could be so fine
But the storys already been told
An epic poem like Beowulf
Could be a big sensation
But, most of the time
The lines dont rhyme
And its full of alliteration
Alone, alone, all, all alone
Alone as I can be
So, Ill call for my pipe
And Ill call for my bowl
And Ill call for my fiddlers three
Ill just gather those rosebuds while yet I may
Old time is still a flying
No poetry Ill do today
I might as well quit trying

Past, Present, & Future
Read: Philippians 3:15-21
I press toward the goal . . . . Brethren, join in following my example. Philippians 3:14,17
Bible In One Year: Malachi 1-4; Revelation 22
In his painting "An Allegory of Prudence," 16th-century Venetian artist Titian portrayed Prudence as a man with three heads. One head was of a youth facing the future, another was of a mature man eyeing the present, and the third was of a wise old man gazing at the past. Over their heads Titian wrote a Latin phrase that means, "From the example of the past, the man of the present acts prudently so as not to imperil the future."
We need that kind of wisdom to overcome the anxiety created by our past failures and the fear of repeating them in the futurean anxiety that keeps us from living to the fullest now.
Paul was able to "forget" his past and anticipate his future (Philippians 3:13-14). This doesn't mean his memory was erased; it means that Paul was free of any guilt or pride he may have felt from his past actions, because God had forgiven him. This attitude enabled him to live in the present and "press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus" (v.14). So he had one driving passionto know Christ better.
As we close the chapter of 2004, let's rededicate ourselves to Christ. Jesus will enable us to live fully in the present as we gain wisdom from the past and face the future with courage. Dennis De Haan
