Close enough. But itt was a composite of my two late uncles, 1 Marines Korean Era and 1 Army WWII European Theatre and my grandfather and father who never served but were very patriotic. Dad lost his left eye when he was a toddler. So he never got to serve but a lot of the thoughts expressed were shared by all four and passed to me.
I miss them all and will fight to preserve what they believed in.

I have not been to the thread, so forgive me if someone has already said this.
I do not think it is any coincidence (spiritually speaking) that the announcement of terrorist leader Arafat's death was given on Veteran's Day. (With all the secrecy who knows exactly when he died.)
So happy Veteran's Day!

I know y'all may have seen this before, but I thought it was appropriate for today to post it again.
Hope you don't mind...
Defenders of Freedom
Defenders of Freedom, thats what we are!
No battlefield too dangerous, no region too far.
Well march thru the desert with sand in our boots,
To search out a tyrant, take aim and shoot.
Well crawl thru the jungle, hide out in the woods,
Sleep in a foxhole, Go for days without food.
Well fire our weapons, drop bombs if we must,
Unless evil surrenders, its Baghdad or bust!
From the tortured and downtrodden we hear the call;
Well hammer away till dictatorships fall,
We want the needy to know that theyre not alone,
Even tho some of us wont return home.
Well lay down our lives so you can be free,
Leave our loved ones behind for your liberty.
From Saratoga to Somalia, well sacrifice;
From Shiloh to Saigon, well pay the price;
From Omaha Beach to The South China Sea,
Wherever were needed, thats where well be!
Youll know when you see the Red, White and Blue,
Well defend your freedom because thats what we do!

We Saved A Seat
We keep a place in the parlor, a seat for an old friend,
Someone who went to fight for us, we shall not see again.
But just in case he wanders by, hes welcome to a rest.
Weve got the seat saved just for him, as flowers will attest.
We dont expect to see him, though we think of him a lot.
We only know he said, Im going, and Ill give it all Ive got.
We know he gave it that and more, and didnt pass in vain.
I guess we sorta knew it when he stepped up on the train.
Id rather think of him that way, instead of in the mud.
And certainly I wouldnt want to think about the blood.
Determined was his visage, and noble was his cause,
And when we count our blessings round, we stop here and we pause.

The prize is Liberty, and the coin of its purchase is Life. We risk our lives in defense of Liberty, and those who survive know its cost, and its value.
I thought this needed to speak again, today. We honor those who served, and we remember them ... the sometimes distant stares, the empty sleeves, and the empty chairs.

I just read for the first time the poems posted here. I fully agree with what Billie has written: It is an awesome collection.
Conspiracy Guy and Nicknamed Bob have clearly earned their Poet Laureate status. And they had solid help from the graphics department.
In addition, Texas Deb, Mossyoaks, Victoria and Amy have all made some impressive selections.
My best wishes to everyone on this Veterans Day!

"Defenders of Freedom" is an excellent poem. Thank you for sharing it with us.
It is a most appropriate time and place to post it again. Several of the poems I posted early are reruns from prior threads. They are worth seeing again.
God bless and protect our military, past and present.
Happy Veterans Day.

Another Veterans Day footnote -
Staff Sgt. Russel Slay, USMC, graduated from Humble High School in 1994. He enlisted in the Marines and has re-upped twice since. All he wanted to do was serve his country.
The 10-yr. Marine was killed Tuesday, November 9 in the Al Anbar area west of Baghdad.
He earned the sad distinction of being the 100th Texan to die in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. Thank you for sharing this information today.
Please, Father, Bless and Comfort the family of Staff Sgt. Russel Slay as they struggle to cope with their grief. Please hold Staff Sgt. Russel Slay in your loving embrace as you welcome him home. In Jesus Name we pray. Amen.

That poem and graphic got to me. As have many of us here, I've spent all day thinking about the debt we owe our veterans.
Thank you both for this moving graphic and poem.
