PB&J
Peanut butter, smooth as silk,
Jelly, white bread, add some milk,
These are all the basic things,
Memories of childhood brings.
If childhood can be marked this way,
I guess mines going on today,
The lunchtime meal I love, you know,
Was just a half-an-hour ago.

It amazes me how quickly you can write poetry. My creativity level is pretty low. I can churn out a lit review in a day...but ask me to write a story and it would take me weeks.
To: NicknamedBob
Thanks, I needed that...yum!

I write stories by employing my imagination. Once I have the scenes and scenario set, the characters and dialogue come easy.
I have not attempted much in the way of short stories, however. All my stories tend to grow...
As for the poetry, I start with a concept, an idea, humorous or otherwise, that I wish to convey. Then I just start coming up with phrases. When I realize that a phrase ends in a word that is awkward to rhyme, I re-phrase it.
In the example of the PB&J poem, one tentative line ended in "foods" --rather than force an awkward rhyme, I just chose the word "things" -- some "things" are easier to thyme than others...
It is much like working your way through a maze. When you reach what looks like a dead end, back up and go another way.
So you are exactly correct, it is an a-mazing talent.
