Here's one for a CA-Girl

In back of the old farmhouse
along the coast, in Mendocino
we slept like two babies in the loft
of the grey-shingled guesthouse
the skylight was a bubble
into the galaxy swirling past
holding us in its arms --
you were like warm chocolate
and to be with you
in that space
was dizzyfying

morning spilled
into the open window
as a bouquet of sea-fresh
pink fuschia, dripping dew
into the darting tongues
of the sunclad
summer hummers
and easy as the silk
on the wings of a butterfly
we fell into the dawn

While You Are Defending Me

On an island of fire,
In an ocean of steel,
I witnessed Sweet Freedom, Sweet Freedom rise.
I pledge, under God, my allegience to thee,
For your Honor, your Valor,
Will never die.

So to you in the air,
And you at sea,
And you always faithful to me,
To you who roll on in the cold grey dawn,
Godspeed, while you are defending me.

In the smoking ruins of shattered peace,
Where hate, and evil, took wing to fly,
You simply say,
We roll today.
For your Honor, your Valor
Will never die.

So to you in the air,
And you at sea,
And you always faithful to me,
To you who roll on in the cold grey dawn,
Godspeed, while you are defending me.

In my prayers at night,
In my anger and fright, I cry,
How can He let this terror be?
The answer came,
I love you the same,
My father,
My brother,
My daughter,
My son,

So roll on my father,
Roll on my son,
Roll on, my husband, roll on,
Roll on, my brother in the cold, grey dawn,
Godspeed, while you are defending me.

In the world to come,
When war's night is done,
We shall see Sweet Freedom, Sweet Freedom rise.
I pledge, under God, my allegience to thee,
Godspeed, while you, are defending me.

So to you in the air,
And you at sea,
And you always faithful to me,
To you who roll on in the cold grey dawn,
Godspeed, while you are defending me.

Winding Roads of Texas

The winding roads of Texas
From Staked Plains to the sea,
Are dressing up for springtime,
And for you and me.
Buttercups and daisies
Are full of April dew,
And the meadows are wearing
Gayest bonnets of blue.

There's perfume from the roses,
There's nectar for the bees,
And the lush prairie grasses
Are waving in the breeze.
The mocking-birds are singing
Their purest melody,
And the meadow larks fly upward
So high, I cannot see.

From San Antonio to Brownsville,
And El Paso in the West,
I cannot name a city
I love above the rest
For all the towns in Texas,
From mountains to the sea,
There is love within my heart,
It's there I long to be.

Crackled Glee

Days have a way of slipping quietly past,
where once they lingered onward, now they never last.

Like the dew in morning as it blankets all the ground,
daylight slowly melts away and gives to nightfall’s sound.

The wheels of time revolve around and tick off each new year,
I have found my graying age popping out so clear.

And with the strands of golden years that line my face and hair,
I brush them out with tangled pride and ease my age with care.

I know I’ve seen such many sights and made my life with me,
yet as the years keep piling up, I long for youth so free.

A time when I matched body-soul and didn’t feel so low,
where dancing round the chimney’s fire I watched the embers glow.

The fire’s out without a doubt, as I sit here alone.
My lover said “Grow old with me,” his name’s now carved in stone.

I ache with pain inside and out and sit most days in chairs,
from inside out I watch the ones who walk in joyful pairs.

So now as day falls silently, I rise to fall to bed,
then suddenly I catch myself and go outside instead.

The moon is bright and calls to me a poem in my head,
it’s music lulls me in sweet bliss and slowly I am fed.

I start to move in rhythm’s dance and sway around a pine,
my lover’s voice is nightfall’s choice, this moment that I dine.

I drink up darkness, breathe it’s scent and eat it’s ripened age,
and deep inside I fill my soul from wisdom’s long lost page.

In quiet brush I fall to ground on needle’s solemn ache,
they snap and crackle like my joints but jolt me wide awake.

My lover’s gone but here’s his voice, planted near a tree,
I spread my arms and throw his voice in crackled, laughing glee.

***Some inspiration for the inevitable appearance of age
Happy Anniversary! Good years ahead!
