At the time, we didn't have a standalone MS, just a GCMS. I had thought of trying to talk the profs into putting together a LCMS, but I graduated before we could even do the synthesis.
The biggest problem is to characterize the location of the Fe; sure, you might have a mass of 776.46 daltons, but where is that Fe? Magnetic moment would show the presence of Fe0; 13C NMR would show a shift - if the iron is on the inside, rattling around, then the shift would be uniform for all the C in the buckyball itself, but different than that of C60.

What rating is the monostable fratilizer (mf). Make sure that the mf hasn't gone asynchronous.Asynchronous mode has many advantages! Fools, I'll show them all! :-)

CGk has been playing with fullerenes. It's a area of Chemistry which is absolutely rife with potential bawdy humor.
Long-chain carbon molecules sometimes get hopelessly knotted up, ending up looking like a balled-up bit of notepaper. They have the shape and atomic appearance of a soccer ball.
The scientific interest is in what could be put inside the soccer ball, like say a hemoglobin molecule, so you could build an oxygen sponge.
Other interest involves its qualities as a lubricant. Since it breaks down to graphite, and it contains the tiniest ball-bearings that can be made.

Isn't the idea of putting the iron inside the molecule that it would protect it from certain chemical reactions?
If that works, it would provide a way to determine the location of the Fe.
If it didn't work, the whole idea is a wash anyway, at least for iron. It could still possibly be used for even larger atoms, such as gold.

I work with a few Asian immigrants' children (grown up here now, of course), as well as a few first-generation. I have to say it's a weird dissonance between my expectation of their voice, versus their actual speech...

I thought about using magnetization to stick the iron-loaded fullerenes to metal surfaces as a lubricant.

Haha! No, I haven't. But that does sound like a riot, alright ..... FOX News just carried sKerry's speech to the American Legion (??). He says now that he will fully support our troops and will win the war on terror. And no apology for his smearing the Vets after coming home from VN. (If you didn't know he was talking to veterans, you could tell he wasn't talking to his "base" since he was talking about supporting the troops).
Congressman J.D. Hayworth says "once again, he flip flops" and shows his hypocrisy. He was gonna call in the U.N. and pull our guys out before. What a ter* Kerry is !!
