Supposedly the mansion was haunted by Sylvia Vaile, as she was often reported as having been seen looking out the windows after her death. According to one legend, when she died, her husband could not part with her so he buried her on the front lawn in a glass-topped coffin set flush with the ground. However, neighborhood protests finally forced him to give his wife a more conventional burial.

Where do you get this stuff? I looked on "haunted house" sites and didn't find it. In fact most sites didn't have much personal info at all.

And my company didn't go on strike, so I didn't have to "report for duty" yesterday.

What would you be doing for them on a Sunday?

The King Rocks

We loved the Jungle Room, with its green shag carpets --floor, walls and ceiling, and outsize gargoyle-enhanced furniture. (The guy who sold it to Elvis "Doing Business in a Flash" Presley closed up shop in a flash immediately after the sale, and left with his $30,000 in cash for parts unknown.)

Also, we loved the Maria-Theresa lamp made right there in Memphis, his six-book library and 14-telyvisions, and the story about how Lisa Marie sneaked Elvis' favorite concert piano out of the house for two months while it was being gold-leafed. The tour seemed surreal, like a parody on a house tour with one guide per room delivering three sentences.

I won our party's contest to find the tackiest souvenir. Although others found pop-up books and pink Cadillac clocks, I chose a small basket with a face towel and a bar soap bearing Elvis' likeness so that, while showering, you could be close to The King as you rubbed his face against your body. The trip was worth a deviation.
