Countless Wonders
Read: Job 9:1-10
[God] does great things past finding out, yes, wonders without number. Job 9:10
Bible In One Year: Psalms 79-80; Romans 11:1-18
When writer Aletha Lindstrom needs a lift for her spirits, she thinks of her favorite poetry book called Who Tells The Crocuses It's Spring? That prompts her to ask other questions like, "Who makes the trees turn all those beautiful colors in the autumn? Who splashes rain in shining puddles? Who makes the stars shimmer in the night?"
Such questions ought to stimulate our own grateful meditation. Centuries ago, Job exclaimed that it is God who "does great things past finding out, yes, wonders without number" (Job 9:10).
It is God who reminds the sun to rise at its appointed time every morning. It is God who keeps the earth steadily rotating at tremendous speed. It is God who feeds the sparrow and dresses the lilies in their splendor. It is God who guides the feathered flocks southward in the autumn and then brings them north again in the spring.
Argue if you like that all these wonders are simply the operation of the laws of nature. But just as civil law is the expression of human will, so also natural law is the expression of God's will and wisdom.
As we see the wonders of creation all around us, let's worship the One who designed them. Vernon Grounds
This is my Father's world
The birds their carols raise;
The morning light, the lily white
Declare their Maker's praise. Babcock
In the wonders of creation we see God at work.

Phyllis the Amaryllis
By Frank L. and Mary T. Hoffman
We'd like you to meet Phyllis,
Our household amaryllis.
For years she grew leaves of green,
But not a flower was seen.
For this flower is Phyllis,
Our household amaryllis.
Her flower stalk was a surprise,
That appeared before our eyes.
We watched her many times each day,
Making sure she was okay.
For this flower is Phyllis,
Our household amaryllis.
Both her flower buds were spread,
Making room for blooms of red.
We looked on with much delight,
As she glowed in the sunlight.
For this flower is Phyllis,
Our household amaryllis.
For nearly twenty-five years,
She almost brought us to tears.
She seemed to have no power,
To grow a yearly flower.
For this flower is Phyllis,
Our household amaryllis.
Yet with no pollen to adorn,
These anthers were not forlorn.
Her beauty stands atop our page,
A masthead that will not age.
For this flower is Phyllis,
Our household amaryllis.
In a very few days,
She entered a new phase.
Then pollen began to show,
As she continued to grow.
For this flower is Phyllis,
Our household amaryllis.
Silhouetted against the light,
Your beauty is a true delight.
Phyllis how brightly you glow,
Viewed against the outside snow.
For this flower is Phyllis,
Our household amaryllis.
Demurely she stands by the door of glass,
Clothed in scarlet; what a lass!
Of beauty there is no lack,
Even when viewed from her back.
For this flower is Phyllis,
Our household amaryllis.
When viewed in great detail,
Her beauty seems so frail.
'Cause Phyllis looks so regal,
We wrote this merry jingle.
For this flower is Phyllis,
Our household amaryllis.
She views the world from giant stalk;
What would she say, if she could talk?
Then in year two-thousand-four,
She sprang before the kitchen door.
For this flower is Phyllis,
Our household amaryllis.
Was she a bit contrary?
No bloom 'til February.
After a week of blooming full tilt,
Alas! Phyllis began to wilt.
For this flower is Phyllis,
God's bright red amaryllis.

The 31 room mansion includes 9 marble fireplaces, spectacular painted ceilings, flushing toilets, a built-in 6,000 gallon water tank, and a 48,000 gallon wine cellar. This mansion is one of the best examples of Second Empire style architecture in the United States.
The chandeliers are all original to the house. Notice the painting on the ceiling where the light is attached.

A view from the front south room (left side when looking at the pictures of the front of the house) into the entry and out the front doors...

Here is the fireplace in that same room...

All the ceilings in the house are 14 ft. high. The wooden shutters on the windows were found in the attic by the historical society and had to be reassemled like a jigsaw puzzle. (You can see a little of the shutters in the picture of the chandelier.)

Supposedly the mansion was haunted by Sylvia Vaile, as she was often reported as having been seen looking out the windows after her death. According to one legend, when she died, her husband could not part with her so he buried her on the front lawn in a glass-topped coffin set flush with the ground. However, neighborhood protests finally forced him to give his wife a more conventional burial. Looks like Silvia's ghost is still active, stealing images.
