Working On It
The dog, of course, will look toward home,
The horse will guide that way.
The cowboy will be safe, once more,
To ride another day.
The question that you have to ask,
Hes such a clever jerk,
To teach the dog and horse so well,
Why does he have to work?

Cowboy Dreams
Ed's eyes were kinda glassy and his mind was in a fog
As he held the dogeared pages of the Western Catalog
His thoughts were interrupted by the ringing at the door
He flew out of the easy chair, feet barely touched the floor
He quickly signed and carefully brought the packages inside
And began to open boxes, with a joy he couldn't hide
Before him lay the trappings for his journey way out West
A brand new Charcoal Stetson, Chaps and Spurs and Boots and Vest
He'd read the books and travel guides, and so, had come to know
That he'd need this gear to fit in, in the wilds of IDAHO
This New York boy was ready for the dream that he'd pursued
He'd blend in like an old hand, stead of lookin like a Dude
The morning found Ed sleepy from a long and restless night
As he waited by his suitcase, for the taxi to his flight
The evening found him riding on a bus with other guests
All staring out the windows at the Wild and Wooly West
Then through the gate and past a barn, the ranchhouse came in view
Ed finally felt his life-long dream was really coming true
They woke him at the crack of dawn, he hurried to get dressed
Then stepped out of the bunkhouse, feeling sure he looked his best
With Sorrel colored Batwing Chaps, and Silver Buckled Belt
Ed strolled into adventure, knowing just how John Wayne felt
He headed toward the holding pen, Spurs jingling as he walked
The Old Hands and the other guests all stopped their idle talk
One Cowboy hid the laughter, that had brought him close to tears
As he saw this "Movie Version", of what he'd been all these years
The Wrangler told Ed, choose a horse, to take out on the trail
Eds eyes fell on a Tan one with a Coal Black Mane and Tail
The Wrangler took his lariat and roped the Buckskin Mare
Then tied her to the hitchin post, and waved Ed over there
They put the saddle on the Mare and tightened up the cinch
And that old gal just stood rock still, she didn't even flinch
Ed climbed aboard and straightened up and pulled back on the rein
The Mare just turned her head, and stared at Ed in pure disdain
The Wrangler came to lend a hand and moved them from the rail
And pointed that Old Buckskin Mare and Ed out toward the trail
Now,, Ed had watched the movies and he knew what Cowboys did
So he shook the rein and said "gitup" and kicked her in the rib
The Buckskin's eyes got wide, she dropped her head and hunched her back
And exploded in indignity, at being spurred like that
They left the ground, then came back down to assorted cheers and hoots
Ed tried to keep those stirrups round his brand new Cowboy Boots
As he grabbed the horn, they went airborn and started spinning round
And he lost his grip when she went up, while he was coming down
When they finally when their separate ways, Ed flew off like a hawk
And the Buckskin Mare just watched him go, then moved off at a walk
They crowded round and looked , as Ed lay stretched out in the dirt
Then picked him up and brushed him off and asked him where he hurt
And since he'd suffered nothing worse then Bruised and Battered Pride
They gathered up the horses to continue with their ride
And Ed, he learned a lesson that most every Old Hand knows
There's more to being a Cowboy, Than just wearing Cowboy Clothes!!!

Desert Spread
While riding through the arid West,
came upon an oasis, quite picturesque.
Gentle rolling hills with tall shade trees,
grassy green meadows and a mild breeze.
Water ponds fed by a rippling brook,
I knew it was home with my first look.
How was it this place had come to be,
in the midst of this desert? A mystery.
Started thinking of what I'd call this spread,
knew it would graze at least two hundred head.
Came upon four wide-of-the-mark buckaroos,
and they all were wearing curious shoes.
We talked of this spread and what it's about,
and I sure felt stupid there's no doubt.
But one thing I did come to understand.
A golf course is a waste of good pastureland!

Catching Lightning
Luciferase, instead of fusion, lights the stars beneath the trees.
We always called them Lightning Bugs, playmates the size of bees.
A game called Mother May I, you move and then you stop,
Wait for the next green signal, just like a traffic cop.
When you get close enough that you can see it in the dark,
Just sweep your hand to catch it with a gentle little arc.
It will alight upon your skin and puzzled, move around,
As if to wonder how the heck it just got on the ground.
They are a gentle creature. Their feet dont even hurt.
As larger beetles sometimes do, as if their boots were spurred.
They walk around and taste you some, but quickly they get bored,
And soon they jump up in the air, and once again theyve soared.
Off to join the traffic. Its rush hour there, you know.
This is a serious business, theyre not just putting on a show.
They have to find their mate out there, with just a tiny light.
Although they are just tiny bugs, they seem to me quite bright.

Home Before Dark
Read: Acts 20:17-25
None of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy. Acts 20:24
Bible In One Year: Job 17-19; Acts 10:1-23
Parents often tell their children, "Be home before dark." And in areas not served by electricity, travelers feel a pressing need to reach their destination while light still lingers in the sky. "Home before dark" means a successful journey and a safe arrival.
Robertson McQuilkin used this phrase to express his desire to remain faithful to the Lord throughout his spiritual journey. His prayer ended with the words "Lord, let me get home before dark." He explained this by first saying, "I fear . . . that I should end before I finish, or finish but not well. That I should stain Your honor, shame Your name, grieve Your loving heart. Few, they tell me, finish well."
McQuilkin's words echo the heartfelt longing of the apostle Paul as he faced danger ahead in Jerusalem: "None of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God" (Acts 20:24).
It is God's word of grace (v.32) that encourages us to continue in faith, for it tells us that He is able to strengthen us until the end of our lives. So let's keep walking and trusting as we pray, "By Your grace, Father, I humbly ask You to help me get home before dark." David McCasland
Immortal words of truth we've read,
So powerfully penned, so filled with grace,
Will follow us through all our days
And spur us on to win life's race. D. De Haan
The race of life is run by faith and won by grace.

Early morning light

In The Morning Light
In the morning see the light
On leaves of grass in fern's delight
Softest glow for eyes to see
Beads of dew majestically
Born each day with love to share
Upon the fern with glory there
Waking in the dawns sweet air
Gentleness that God puts there
Diamonds glow on nature's wings
Such a sight that always brings
Joy upon the earth each day
Statement of God's love they say
Sustenance that comes each day
Perfection you can't take away
For every morning like a prayer
Dew is blessed with crystal glare
Brought to you with God's delight
Covered with the glow of light
Water beads reflecting love
Sprinkled down from up above.
~ Francine Pucillo ~
