That does not answer the question.

You're escaping?
*sigh*
I guess I shall have to stow away in your handbag, even if I look funny with it on my head walking around behind you.

When I was in, they were not putting women in combat situations intentionally.

Women have been serving in the military in a large way since WWII, and at my post, I saw women going through basic training. As my wife observes about six-year old kids in oversized football helmets, "They looked 'cute.'"

Let me explain. A man, in good health, at the peak of his strength and vigor, makes a damn fine warrior! It's an insult to that phenomenon to suggest that an average women can serve that way, as well.

While it is true that much of warfare these days is what is called a push-button war, there are times, ... there are always times, when things don't go as planned. Heck, there are times when plans A, B, C, D, and E don't work, and you have to go with Forget it!I'm Going in! Like some of the Marines we've read about lately.

What then to do?

While I was in, the draft was in force, and we discussed it. Some people got out of the draft because they were not physically fit, the same people who now get those cushy close parking spots at the stores because they are equal.

We knew, even then, that this was wrong. The draft should have been Universal, and everyone should have been required to serve in some manner. Think of all the able-bodied young recruits who were selected for their outstanding physical condition, went through months of arduous exercises, and ended up sitting at a desk. Those positions could have been filled by people in wheelchairs. The blind could be radio operators, even people with mental handicaps could find ways to serve, and reasons to have pride in their service thereby.

Back to women. Same thing, women have jobs they can do even better than men, and they should take pride in the fact. Women make better communication operators, because their voice transmits more clearly through the equipment. To a large degree, this is the way it was for me in my time, and it worked.

The "social engineers" who are messing with the military, are messing it up. Some of them may be doing so deliberately.

Eli Whitney's concept of interchangeable parts dealt with interchangeable parts of equivalent nature. Identical triggers, identical stocks, identical hammers, and identical locks. If you had tried to make a cotton gin out of a bin full of similar widgets, he would have looked at you as if you were crazy, and he would have been right.

In small units, it's important to cross-train, so that every member of the team knows everyone else's job, and the loss of one member does not lead to the loss of the whole unit.

But in anything as large as the U.S. Military, there are specialty jobs. Jobs for which you have to be a certain minimum height, or maximum height. There could be other criteria. There is no reason why a position can not be found for any one who wants to serve, even including those who may be fit for nothing more than being targets. (Was that John Kerry's ambition?)

Rapes should be as rare among women in the military as it is among women police officers, and for the same reason. Romances and pregnancies are matters of choice, and if we want to be fair, we should allow men the same ability to weasel out of unpleasant duty by simply requesting it, and we should make sure that the replacement duty is even less pleasant. For men and women.

War is a serious business. We should only use what works, and anyone who seriously wants to help.

I wonder how tough it would be to go back to say .... February and save all of the poems and graphics to a document for future use? Do either of you know when you first brought a poem to Amy's Place?

We have what you two have contributed plus a few from some other talented FReepers.

I have several saved but I did not save the early ones. : (

I have saved all my significant works, but Amy's was not the first place I posted. Even so, I don't think I posted anywhere before February 15 of this year.

I have some poems, as do you, that were written earlier, some even undated. And I have a couple that I need to retrieve from ancient storage that deal with memorials and tributes to friends and family members.

One of the reasons I have been storing them is to follow up on the possibility of producing a "best of" in some manner. Think we could get Jim-Rob to make a deal with a publisher for a Free Republic Officially Sponsored Best Poetry Series?

Poetry books do sell, but mostly to the poets themselves, and their doting and supportive parents.

Some of the poems, especially with graphics, are only significant with the graphics.

This should not pose too much difficulty as far as reposting, but if we were to follow my suggestion for a printed work, we might have some difficulty with securing rights to some of the images. Image printing is also more expensive.

Our artists might have to work overtime.

CG and I, as well as other poets, would probably have to do some intro and explanatory writing as well.

Coffee table Free Republic Poetry, (and coffee mugs!!!)

I like the idea...

I'm not sure whether just giving the artists credit would be sufficient.

I think I will try capturing as many as possible and then we can decide what to do with them.

Also when Jim and I both get back from vacation, I will talk to him. I know we cannot sell anything on FR but we may be able to get someone else to produce and market it. I need to see what the rules are. Sheeze .... I can't keep up with all the legal stuff!!!

Ahhhh .... thank you, OESY.

How sad that youth does not understand the importance of happiness over material things.

That is a sad story of "What If's?"

Thank you for sharing it with us.

I hope you had a Terrific Tuesday and I'm wishing you a Wonderful Wednesday!!

"What did I say?"

PAL was just wondering if James Brown was too antiquated.
