Heh...I think my parents hid that book after the third kid or so. I liked it a lot...but it gets reallllly old to read out loud after awhile!

No skipping church on account of the guest preacher, though! Just do what I do in that situation: think about something else during the sermon--you'd be surprised how interesting the lyrics in the songbooks can be sometimes :)

We have been seriously spoiled by Really Good Preaching - which is why we drive an hour to church. I used to have the habit of not paiyng attention in sermons, but I've lost it since we started this church. I know it's bad but... well... sitting there for forty-five minutes of preaching and thinking, "I could be doing this, I could be doing that" is a really bad attitude for church.

The thirty minutes of singing, prayers, etc doesn't quite make up. Why couldn't we have the really terrific guy instead of the really adequate one?

True--I had it memorized because my Mom read it to my little brother so many times :)

I just checked and our library has a copy of 5000 Fingers of Dr. T! I'll rent that next time I go :)

45 minutes is an awful long sermon. But usually even a really bad sermon raises a topic which I can find interesting enough to daydream about. Or if not sometimes I will just take the opportunity to practice meditating--can always think about breathing if there's nothing else to do.

Not a long sermon when the pastor's there! But he's taking a three week study leave (spends it down in Florida at a seminary, reading about whatever he's going to preach on for the next year). So we've got filler.

The guy we have usually has decent points. His delivery, though, puts me in mind of a young, slightly more tolerable, Ross Perot.

I don't know... um... we're Presbyterians. And the village where our church is located is Scottish heritage. So I think St. Patrick's Day is ignored in general.

I'm just happy the guy doesn't show up in a kilt. Though, bagpipes would be neat with our pipe organ...

Technically Catholics are supposed to wear green on St Patrick's day, and Protestants are supposed to wear orange.

Really, that's interesting. I guess we just don't care that much in my family.

'Tis an Irish holiday that has morphed into American culture. In America, ya don't have to be Irish even. It goes back to William of Orange, though. Don't know 'bout Scots wearing the colors.
