What difference does the 'hate' in 'hate crime' make?

News reports are crackling with the breathless announcement that the Buffalo shooter, Payton Gendron, is also being charged as the perpetrator of a hate crime — in addition to ten counts of murder in the first degree. I could practically hear the buttons popping off the shirts of the nauseatingly self-important "officials" who made this call.

Had Mr. Gendron merely wanted to steal the wallets from the victims of his shooting spree, would the crime be any less heinous?

Emanating from this absurdity is the farcical nature of so much of the legislation that is promoted as problem-solving. The news media are in on the scam. In addition to actual news, they are constantly broadcasting the pained utterances of the surviving friends and relatives of unfortunate victims. Grief is not news...but it is a useful and contagious emotion.

I have often mused that if I were president, I'd create a new Cabinet position — secretary of the Department of Fatuous Gestures. Within its purview would be such pointless posturing as hate crimes, gun-free zones (as if criminals are inclined to obey rules), and the War on Drugs. (Remember that? Drugs won.)

Whenever a horrible crime is committed, and hate is added to the charges, I just can't help but smirk. "Why bother?" I ask. Murder, assault, robbery, etc. should already have substantial penalties attached to their conviction. Hate is nothing more than a state of mind, often occurring without causing any physical action. Also, criminal acts seldom, if ever, occur between individuals who are actually fond of each other. "What about domestic violence?" you may ask...but in those cases, love is no longer a significant component. Frustration, resentment, jealousy, and proximity are the real factors.

The word ‘hate’ means that those crimes are ones which minorities cannot commit.

“Hate” crime is the gateway drug to the Thought Police.

If it is applied equally?
.... which will never happen on a consistent basis.

It’s a political tool.

I am completely dead set against “hate” legislation.

There should be color-blind laws on the books to prosecute when needed. “Hate” legislation is a Leftist side-show in my opinion.

I find it odd that a .223 round at point blank makes an "X" mark on the forehead of the victim. No blood, puncture mark or braking of the scull just an "X" mark and a poof of air moving her hair and clothing.

I can't remember what video game makes an "X" when you hint a specific target.

The purpose, imo, is to demonize hate.

Hate is fine. God hates all over the place and God is good.

First, a hate crime is not the opposite of a love crime.

“Hate crime” is a term that does not appear in the United States Constitution. It is an invented term in popular culture to describe a feeling, look, or attitude that is not popular. It some cases it describes an actual crime committed against a protected class member by a member of a class that is not protected.

To my knowledge, a hate crime cannot be committed against a member of a protected class by another member of that protected class. Such an event would be a non-hate crime.

Scene from the movie True Grit…..

Maddie: Why do you suppose they hung him so high?

Rooster: Maybe they thought it would make him more dead

Hate crime designation was started for Matthew Shepherd’s death. Turns out his killers were also homosexual. For that reason, hate crime should simply be CRIME: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/oct/26/the-truth-behind-americas-most-famous-gay-hate-murder-matthew-shepard

Since when have most liberals, most progressives, and all Marxists ever made sense?

End of story!

They are THE “existential threat” to our country, our Constitution, our freedoms, and our very lives.

If you aren’t Free, all else is secondary or irrelevant.

Once more into the breech and take no prisoners this coming November’s election!!!

What about crimes such as the murder of an accused adulterer that are committed out of love? Does the fact that it’s a “love crime” make it less serious?

As for me, I had rather be murdered by some who likes me, or
maybe just a jealous husband.

War on drugs only failed as it wasn’t properly executed.

Or, perhaps there should have been MORE executions of Drug Lords and of Bribed Civic Officials?

War on drugs only failed as it wasn’t properly executed.

The same war was a spectacular success in Singapore where drug traffickers are properly executed and addicts get three chances at rehab before thy are exiled from society.

These twin weapons have the effect of reducing the supply and the demand simultaneously.
