Tom Brady Vs. Bill Belichick: Lessons For The U.S. Military?
19FortyFive ^ | 2/28/2021 | James Holmes

The Brady v. Belichick controversy, then, could besmirch the Patriots’ image as a winner along with Belichick’s reputation as a coaching whiz. In turn, the team’s ability to recruit elite players would suffer. And without elite players, it’s an open question whether even a virtuoso coach can execute his game plans. Perversely, then, the team could stagnate on the field if an abstract debate among sports fans and experts goes against Belichick. Bottom line, subjective impressions of power and weakness—whether fair and accurate or not—have direct implications for a competitor’s future success. Reputation is everything.

This is true in the NFL; it’s also true in power politics.

I am a huge Eagles fan and I like watching Fox's Undisputed sports show. Coming out of SB52, the consensus was that Belichek blew the game by, among other things, benching Malcolm Butler for (still-to-this-day) unknown reasons. Brady and Foles had the games of their careers, and that SB came down to Brandon Graham's strip-sack. Even still, I wasn't celebrating until the Hail Mary pass landed incomplete, no flag, and 0:00 on the clock. But had Bill not overplayed his hand and benched Butler, and had Butler made at least ONE defensive play (because that's all it took to win that SB) maybe Brady wouldn't have considered leaving.

They Pats won the SB in the following year but the crack in the wall was there..it became a full-on rupture in 2021.

I'm not fully sold on the aura over substance argument. But this article is worth pondering.

The coaching staff has apparently adjudged the Newton experiment a failure, and is pondering where to find a new superstar QB.

The Pats actually had a worthy successor to Brady, Jimmy Garoppolo. But they dished him off to the 49'ers where he promptly pulled off a 13-3 season as a starter (2019).

I think it has an even greater lesson for government schools: the star player (student) matters the most.

If the truth be told, Newton has not been interested in whether he won or not, or any team goals, for quite a while. He is only interested in collecting a paycheck and does not/will not give any extra effort. I think that's why The Panthers let him go.

Football is a game.

Start arming the players and see how many still want to play.

WATCHING The parade in Philly the next week was one of the most incredible things I’ve ever seen in my life

All those years since 1950 it was like demons had been exposed sized out of the soul of Philadelphia and everybody was rejoicing it was a thing to be old

Hundreds and hundreds of people took their grandfathers and their father’s ashes and spread them on the parade route and celebration that they never got to see

That is the transformative thing about sports and why cheaters never prosper

That sir was a. VICTORY. and FOLES IS ALL TIME PHIILY HERO

UP TGERE WITH TUG MCGRAW

I know the party line was that JG wanted to start, but I read that this trade was due to Kraft getting such a request from Brady.

I believe it. Having a clear mental state of mind is vital. My poor Eagles QB situation is a case in point. Franchise QB gets a torn ACL and the backup becomes the Super Bowl MVP. Franchise QB returns next year and plays awful...a fortuitous (!) injury results in backup becoming the star AGAIN. Backup finally leaves (though his statue is in front of the building) and Franchise QB finally makes it to the playoffs and gets knocked out with a concussion. Team tells Franchise QB "we believe in you" and drafts a QB in the first round when they need weapons and offensive linemen...WTF? Franchise QB stinks on ice and gets benched for first round draft pick.

I wish Wentz the best, because while he caused problems, the Eagles colossally screwed with his head. We deserve to suck for a few years.

Close.

I believe it’s the US Naval Acadamy he has ties to. That’s where his Dad coached.

I think it has an even greater lesson for government schools: the star player (student) matters the most.

I read a management book years ago that rejected the common notion that a "good manager" works closely with the poor performers and tried to turn them into good performers. The author expressed the view that poor performers generally would always be poor performers: give up on them. Instead, focus on high achievers and do everything you can to help them achieve more. They carry the team.

Whether that advice is appealing or not, clearly our society does not do that. We seem to spit on high achievers and mostly glorify the poor performers at the bottom, telling ourselves how great they are.
