New research has found that 95.5 percent of individuals who died with a coronavirus-positive diagnosis in the Mass General Brigham health system did so in the hospital, according to a letter published in the Journal of Palliative Medicine.
The data, collected between February 18 and May 18, also revealed that about 40 percent of hospital deaths occurred in the intensive care unit, further highlighting the need for more ICU beds amid the surge of virus cases across the country.
Based on the overwhelming number of patients who died in the hospital and ICU, the research noted that it is highly likely that most patients who expressed a desire to die at home weren’t able to do so.
“Surveys have shown that most patients prefer to die at home, but there is also an ongoing debate about whether that is the best option for patients when resources for at-home care are limited,” corresponding author Dr. Isaac Chua, of the Division of General Internal Medicine and Primary Care at Mass General Brigham, said in a news release.
“The purpose of this study was to open up a larger conversation about whether we need to provide more advanced care at home, so that if patients want to die at home, they would have that option.”

Hospitals are no place for sick people.
Seriously.
Some die “of” COVID, others die “with” COVID.
Not the same, but both are counted as “COVID deaths”.
There must be bodies everywhere.
Statistically, hospitals are pretty much even more dangerous than the bad parts of Chicago and New Orleans.
I avoid them.
“If A then B” doesn’t always equate to “If B then A”. But with COVID-19, the latter is magically true almost 100% of the time (If You Die In A Hospital, You Die From Coronavirus).

Nobody ever dies in the morgue.
Hmm, all the people are dying in one sort of place.
Solution: Build more places like that!
From time to time, hospitals are forced to shut down.
When that happens, death rates in the community tend to decline.
Rather than highlight a need for ICU beds this makes me think “stay out of the ICU!!”
It’s almost like really sick people go to hospitals, or something.
Next thing you know, we’ll find out most people who die in plane crashes bought airline tickets or were aircraft crew.
Or is it because people are locked in rooms laying on their backs while their lungs fill with fluid from their bodies immune systems fight against Covid.
Sister in law survived because my brother, the Doc, saw what is happening in hospitals. Kept her out and up and moving around, also well dosed on steroids. In February before others were advocating for its widespread use.
In her last years, I had to take my mother to the ER on several occasions, as the result of her congestive heart failure. On one such visit, a kindly ER doctor told her that he probably should admit her, but if he did so, she surely would die there, as “hospitals are no place for you; it’s too dangerous for you to be here.”

That’s where you tend to die from stuff that doesn’t kill you instantly.
CDC data for the last 10-12 years shows virtually NO difference in the total US deaths. So, the deaths in 2020 are just reclassified normal deaths.
Sure they do.
Probably not many, but some.
Live people who were thought to be dead, have been found in morgues.
People work in morgues; some of them have heart attacks, strokes, or accidents, in the morgue.
You are SO right!
They must follow their “protocol” - even if it kills you.
