The only hockey players most Americans can name from the top of their heads are Gretzky, Howe, Messier, and Lemieux.
I would rate hockey at the lowest of the 4 big sports.
Why doesn't it get much attention?
Hockey is big in states where the ice in lakes is three feet thick every winter.
*** A lack of star-power and dynasties in major media centers. Look at the NBA just prior to Magic and Bird getting drafted - pretty much the same situation as the NHL and probably worse. But bringing a charismatic superstar to LA and his arch-rival to Boston built up interest throughout the 80s, and the arrival of Jordan in the NBA cemented it. ***
The NHL buries Mario Lemieux in Pittsburgh, same with Jagr. Gretzky is in Edmonton until they decide to sell him to the LA Kings were Hockey didn’t matter. The NHL has been the worst run of the Big 4 sports forever. But the NFL is giving them a run for their money now.
I do, because I was there, as well as the “Bat” game that took place in that series, had season tickets from Bisons/Sabres, up until 2007. I think it was Jim Lorentz that finally got the bat, either him or Craig Ramsey, it was a long time ago LOL.
Wikipedia, for what its worth.
Because it sucks
It’s boring
It’s unnecessarily violent
The paid “professional athletes” suck
And who in the world, with a real life, wants to watch that crap, unless you have such an empty existence that living life through the lens of peaked in high schoolers is all you have to look forward to in your miserable existence on thid beautiful planet.
Maybe that’s why.
Oh...and soccer mom’s get day care...and KAREN haircuts
Get a hobby
Get a life
Exactly. That was a classic. I actually prefer low scoring games, too many goals cheapens the thrill of one.
OK there’s a handful. But still Las Vegas is more a hockey town than Phoenix (your guy played there as a kid) where more kids play.

I would suspect that more Americans had heard of Bobby Orr or Bobby Hull than those two Frenchies, though I could very well be wrong.
I would rate hockey at the lowest of the 4 big sports.
Sure. That's because all the players are Canadians.
A bigger question is why we made field hockey into a girls sport.
It really did. This classic game would've been ruined by teams jacking up 3s at the end.
Phoenix @ Boston (1976 NBA Finals - the crazy end!)
Nevertheless, I have lived all but two years of my life in Minnesota. It says right here: It's darned popular in my state.
If the standard is "can you get killed or seriously maimed" rodeo and some equestrian events would also qualify.
Sorry but its effectively the same game, smaller field and faster pace but its basically the same game... in fact they are so similar whenever I run into someone who says they try to watch hockey and dont understand it... I simply ask them, do you understand the rules of soccer and if they say yes, I tell them, effectively the same rules... and once I tell them that, you can literally see the light bulb go off in their heads and the comprehension kick in as suddenly they correlate the rules of hockey to the rules of soccer..
Hockey is soccer with a faster pace, but its still soccer and thats why most Americans could care less about it.
Hell if you live in a town without a team you generally have zero following .
I think the last time the Penguins were in the Stanley Cup Finals, more than half or 3/4 the total audience of all games were just in Pittsburgh area.
Let 10 or so years ago I took my truck up to a local dealer which (in the area I was living at the time) offered services until midnight. So, I went to the waiting room while my truck was being looked after and there was a television in the waiting room with no remote control and a hockey game was on and I sat there, and sat there, and sat there... by the time my truck was done I had watched the entire game. I went to the maintenance desk to pick up my truck keys and pay my bill and was asked if my weight was okay and all I could respond to was essentially that it was the first time I’ve ever watched an entire hockey game. And it was!
I’ve watched a few sinse but I’m not a fan per se, but I do occasionally see a game now rather than never see a game as was the case before I went to that car dealership.
That game paved the way to the Cup. For my money no sporting event compares to NHL Stanley Cup Playoff hockey. Nothing.
I'll take a 1-0 Pitchers' duel, over an 11-10 slugfest, anyday.
Not trying to convince you other wise, but for just a moment, take into consideration going @ Generally they can reach the low 210's mph but race from 150 - 180 on average, among 20 plus people, as I like to put it, TRYING to kill you, while at the same time, trying not to kill you.
If your heart isn't pumping twice as fast as normal, let's face it, your dead already.
For the average person, not familiar with going say 150 mph, as I use to do quite often as a kid, (I'm 66 yr's old) the white dotted lines on the freeway, become solid lines, with no breaks in them. At first you wonder, am I seeing what's not there! This generally starts to occur at approx. 135 mph. By 150 mph, PLUS; it's in full effect.
About that time. Maybe a little bit before.
Because it isn't played in high school and you can't easily watch your favorite team on TV. People aren't exposed to it. I loved and played hockey in JH/HS (in a private league), in Arizona. I was a goalie.
