Anyone want to participate in a music play-off bracket-type poll for best songs of the '50s?
At the start of this year, as well as 2 and 5 years ago, I ran "tournaments" to pick the best songs of the '60s, '70s and '80s, based on Billboard rankings, so only the best of the best were included!
Normally it'd probably be next year before I'd even attempt. But given this stay-home COVID nonsense, I thought maybe everyone would like another something to do.
You can view how the earlier versions played out here:

I can do this for the '50s; I've wanted to do so even though there is a risk that not many would easily participate. I assume I could start it next week.
Pinging a few who had 50s interest as well as my old 60s ping!
Please consider joining for a tournament of the best 50s songs!
Anyone is welcome, any time, and I will add (or delete) you from my ping list for alerts.
Please add me. Would it be possible to explain how the process works? How do you determine what songs make your list?
Before my time. Even some of the early 60’s stuff was a stretch for me. Born in ‘55. Just a kid.
Please add me. Thank You
Such as the best songs from 1975...or 1981.
Personally I dont care. I love so much music I just listened always to what I want and my birth year be damned!
IN...
Oh, wow, if we did it by year, it would be easy. Just use all the top 64 of each year. But that would be ALOT of years and a lot of time to cover 30 or 40 years! LOL
My preference now is maybe to have everyone vote for the tops of the years, and then seed them based on that. That will likely be my new approach.
Basically, I take the top 7 rated songs of each year for the decade per Billboard. First everyone ranks the #7 songs, which weeds out 6 songs so we are left with a total of 64 songs for the decade (top 7 would mean 70 songs, which we dont need). Then I try to arrange those 64 into a kind of play-off system, which can be difficult, but mostly it is based on the ranks and the years of the songs.
In the past, this was all Billboard rankings. It should still be BB although they had slightly different methods for ranking early songs.
Me too, and I love 30's and 40's big band and swing. But for whatever reason, parents weren't big on 50's pop, and I didn't hear much of it growing up.
My parents were very eclectic, so I am too. I love just about anything. And as a RevWar nut, I love the songs arranged for fife & drum!
okay! Put me on ping list!!
Sure! I’d play! :-)
I will. I found some pleasant surprises in the 60s.
I would suggest dividing it between early 50s and late 50s. One issue with the 60s tournament is the chasm between pre-1965 and post-1965. Not a lot in common between Percy Faith and Sly and the Family Stone. You have a similar dynamic (but to a lesser degree) in pre-Rock ‘n’ Roll and post.
