I would suggest dividing it between early 50s and late 50s. One issue with the 60s tournament is the chasm between pre-1965 and post-1965. Not a lot in common between Percy Faith and Sly and the Family Stone. You have a similar dynamic (but to a lesser degree) in pre-Rock ‘n’ Roll and post.

In the 1930's, there was a considerable difference between Barnacle Bill the Sailor (1930) and Moonlight Serenade (1939), and in the '40's, Who's Taking You Home Tonight? (1940) is about as different from Rock the Joint (1949) as Summer Place (1960) is from Dance to the Music (1968).
