Problem solving brain teaser...
This was a question on a test a friend recently took for part of a job application.
He said it was not a timed test, just took it at home and emailed it back.
I got the answer, but it took a couple minutes...

Given statements 1 to 3 below, what additional information is needed in order to conclude that the bottle of tea is bigger than the bottle of oil?

1) "The bottle of juice is bigger than the bottle of milk."

2) "The bottle of tea is bigger than the bottle of juice."

3) "The bottle of water is bigger than the bottle of tea."

A. The bottle of juice is smaller than the bottle of oil.

B. The bottle of water is smaller than the bottle of tea.

C. The bottle of milk is smaller than the bottle of oil.

D. The bottle of oil is smaller than the bottle of milk.

E. The bottle of oil is smaller than the bottle of water.

Not sure what the rest of the test was like but I thought it was a pretty good problem solving test... He was applying to be a manager of a mobile home park.

I will post my answer and thinking for each option tomorrow... if anybody want's to give it a shot

Since all mentioned were bigger it stands that all are bigger than the bottle of oil, so D.

Spoiler: D is correct.

Just write the known sizes as given, M J T W... and only the D answer will put the oil before T.

D. The bottle of oil is smaller than the bottle of milk.

WATER > TEA > JUICE > MILK > [OIL]

Tells you it is smaller than everything else.

Given statements 1 to 3 below, what additional information is needed in order to conclude that the bottle of tea is bigger than the bottle of oil?

1) “The bottle of juice is bigger than the bottle of milk.”

2) “The bottle of tea is bigger than the bottle of juice.”

3) “The bottle of water is bigger than the bottle of tea.”

If we let M = milk, J = Juice, T =tea and W = water,
we are given that (from smallest to largest) M J T W.

If the bottle of tea is bigger than a bottle of oil then the bottle of oil can be smaller than M and J, larger than M but smaller than J, or larger than J but smaller than T.

E is ruled out because if the bottle of oil was smaller than the bottle of water then potentially the bottle of oil could be larger than the bottle of tea.

B is ruled out because it is given that the bottle of water is bigger than that of the bottle of tea.

If we are given A, C, D we will know the bottle of oil is smaller than the bottle of Tea.

Final answer.

It's not a legitimate test unless it asks how many pancakes can a bunny rabbit balance on its head........

Trailer parks are notorious for failing to ask that question to potential park managers.......Why? I don't know.....

All that needs to suffice is that the bottle of oil is smaller than the bottle of tea. Therefore the bottle of oil could potentially be larger than the bottle of juice or it could be smaller than the bottle of juice but bigger than the bottle of milk. Since the question does not specify whether we are to choose one or multiple answers, then all answers that fit should be chosen. Thus the answers that fit the condition are in my previous post.

Merely placing the bottle of oil as being smaller than the bottle of milk does satisfy only a part of the condition but not all of the conditions listed. So it is partly right.
