Is this a sign of what is coming for the rest of the nation? In Martin County, Kentucky times are very tough right now. Thanks to severe budget cutbacks, there are only two paid law enforcement officers covering a deeply impoverished 231-square-mile area that sits right in the heart of Americas raging opioid crisis. Needless to say, Martin County Sheriff John Kirk feels greatly outnumbered by the thieves, sexual predators and drug dealers that he has to contend with on a daily basis, and he recently issued a very ominous warning to the citizens of his county
Before making a wave of cutbacks across his department, Martin County Sheriff John Kirk delivered a grim warning to residents of this hardscrabble Appalachian community.
Law enforcement as we have known for the last four years will not exist, he posted on Facebook last month. WE ARE BROKE
LOCK YOUR DOORS, LOAD YOUR GUNS AND GET YOU A BARKING, BITING DOG. If the Sheriffs office cant protect you, WHO WILL?

Gotcha .... the one up the road barks when it hears a humming bird LOL
You said people won’t feel it (missing the police) because they will just have their own guns to protect themselves.
So an 85 year old woman with a gun is not very smart. Sure a couple can handle it but I’d say most can’t. I had to take my mom’s gun away when she was 80 and almost accidentally shot the dog.
And they all know who's "from around here" and who ain't.
Well when they’ve done something that merits having a police force that’s a good thing.
I am glad for you.
But I need more back story :(
Stolen truck with dogs in it?
I am 66, have fired a gun, and feel it for awhile if I project something heavy. Getting old aint for the faint of heart.
with a eye to the stand with the .32 Smith and Wesson
pistol in the cabinet drawer
Both illegal storage methods in my state. Not saying many comply, though. And local LE not interested in enforcing except in extreme cases (like little kids having access)
When I said “they would feel it” I was referring to the police not being available to respond.
But yes firing a gun when you get older (or too young) it can definitely leave an impression that you won’t forget soon.
Whoa ! That’s not true. The only time I lock my doors up here on the mountain is when we’re expecting family !!
You are right...the gun grabbers are the worst of the worst.
Naw, just a posse of sworn deputies.
“Sounds like its time for form a Second Amendment militia.”
It already is...albeit very loosely.
“You said people wont feel it (missing the police) because they will just have their own guns to protect themselves.”
First, don’t put words in my mouth. That’s not sanitary because I don’t know where your hands have been.
Second, I said that the sheriff has sent a message to the community that it’s open season on criminals. What don’t you get about a sheriff telling people to protect themselves, their families and their community?
When the sheriff says protect yourselves that means you band together to protect your community.
This is basic 101 community protection. That means 85-year-old grannies and grandpas are protected by the community. What don’t you get about that?
Self-defense is an unalienable right.....
Exactly, now add to that the ability to do so and we have true freedom, no cops needed (or at least far far less needed)
As a matter of fact I would wave all rights to police protection if it guarantees my right to defend myself without repercussions.
I had a barking, biting dog. I lost him when he bit a neighbor kid and I had to surrender him to animal control. Lord I loved that dog, a German Shepherd rescue. But if you don’t socialize them as puppies, it is impossible to do so as an adult.
Sorry Rescue Fanatics, but my next GSD is going to be a puppy I socialize continuously from birth. I don’t mind a good velcro guard dog who is a one-owner dog, but I want to be able to walk him without him barking at everything that goes by. On a ranch, that is OK. In the burbs, not so much.
Good point and I agree. I have not nor do I ever plan on needing ANYONE to protect me, I am perfectly capable of that myself.
Dang,
That looks Real!
I have a ferocious sounding black Lab that will sound the alarm. But she’s just the early warning system. Me and my Glock 23 are the response team/welcoming committee.
A little interpretation for our fellow Freepers.
PG county - Prince Georges County, MD.
AA county - Anne Arundel County, MD
No it’s the sherif whining for more money.
