So if you find a really fine can of sardines, do you eat them — or save them as collectors’ items?

For now, my favorite; taste and value wise, are those packed in Morocco by Season, a NJ company. I like them with hot peppers, but plain is good. I can always dress them up myself.

I don't like the ones canned with hot sauce. Usually the meat seems to have dried out. Maybe the vinegar in the hot sauce does it? I prefer to add the hot sauce, or sriracha sauce, after dumping them in my plate.

I have a case of "Wild Planet" sardines ordered. I've read they are also pretty good, but from the Pacific, so I plan to test them in a darkened room to see if they glow before eating them - /jk - Fukushima joke. :)

I’m hoping that if there’s enough migratory radiation in them from Japan, I’ll eventually get superpowers.

LOL! That actually is a concern of mine as well. I've been eating the ones caught East of North America. Have some Pacific caught ones coming. Will have to let you know if I also acquire those superpowers.

Hehe ... yup, they’re not for everyone. I started eating Underwood sardines in mustard sauce when I was just a little kid because my mom and dad liked them. Not sure if the Underwood brand is even around any longer, but these are better because the fish is larger. Also had them in something resembling Tabasco sauce as well as soybean oil ... too oily. I think the mustard sauce masks the oil.

Most sardines are quite a bit higher. I have to restrict sodium so I know a lot of products that are low. https://healthyheartmarket.com/collections/top-products

Isn’t the consumption of sardines related to gout?

Many high protein foods can cause gout, as well as kidney issues. If you are someone who has a history of gout, or kidney problems, I'd certainly limit the amount of protein consumed. Probably talk to your doc about it, and ask how much protein consumption is okay for you.

I've read older folks need more protein. But certainly one doesn't want to go overboard. Same thing goes for any food group. Check with your doc before a making a major change in diet though.

All that said, I believe sardines are one of the highest quality proteins one can eat.

I grind up a few anchovies into my Caesar’s salad dressing and no one knows but everyone raves.

I wish I could get sardines into my mouth and eat them. I know how healthy they are.

That's too bad. Where you eating a can daily? Also, were you taking a protein powder as part of your diet program?

Glad to hear you are on the mend. I have a BIL who has occasional bouts with gout. It's painful, according to him.

No Costco here. None of the local stores carry them either. I order by the case through Amazon.

I prefer them packed in olive oil, especially the Mediterranean and Cracked Pepper styles.

Me too. I also like the ones with the sliced peppers canned inside. I've eaten many cans of Brunswick Canadian Cracked Peppers sardines. Very tasty!

I get a case before hurricane season to have a good protein on hand.

As a prepper myself, sardines are one of the main food items I like to keep on hand. They're relatively inexpensive, have a long shelf live, easily transportable, are a high energy source, and quick to prepare.

I eat them down to the last can. For instance, I have one can left of the Brunswick sardines in oil with hot peppers from a case.

Since they no longer make them, I'm hoping someday they'll be worth as much as an original Micky Mantle signature baseball card! :D
