DNA Testing Companies Admit Adding Fake African Ancestry To White Profiles To “Screw With Racists”

Who were your ancestors? What is your ethnic background composed of? Sites like Ancestry.com and 23andme have always been some go to sources in answering all of your toughest questions. But how accurate are they? In a recent interview with Cracked, one of the major ancestry testing companies, (which specific company is unknown) spilled the beans on what really happens when you purchase an ancestry kit. While I can’t say I’m surprised, you may be shocked to learn that these ancestry sites aren’t always as accurate as they claim to be. Beyond this, they’ve also admitted to tampering with the result to “screw with racists”.

When Inside Edition had a set of triplets send their spit in to Ancestry.com and 23andMe, they got wildly different results from both services. Neither gave each triplet the same ancestry results. “Tests can be a crapshoot. For DNA tests, they use genetic markers, which are little variations in the DNA one or several groups may have, but others do not. The more markers there are, the more accurate the test will be.”

Shocked yet? Yeah, I didn’t think so. A lot of my friends have taken these types of DNA Tests, and most of them come back saying, “I don’t think this is entirely accurate…”

People don’t realize there is a fair amount of variability in these tests. Take the same test twice and you may see a 5% to 10% difference in your results. That’s what happened with the triplets, they had similar results but there were small differences between them.

The tests are often spot on. I know several people that have identified relatives. Even a person that discovered their biological father.
The heritage identifiers might be skewed, but not the DNA markers.

The one thing that can be used, if you know the parents, grandparents names and birthdates/county birthplaces, it is a good start to do a your own geneology research... on your own. Going backward and reading birth certificates at local courthouses, usually in the Registrar of Deeds office. Used to be public record and free, except for copies were 25 cents.... most should be online now.

Thanks, I have used the above site, but even though I know from US records that my ggGrandfather was born in 1829, I have no clue of the month and day. That makes finding him impossible.

If she came to America and you know timeframe...have you tried the ships logs?

Well, I am a mutt. Some of my ancestors were from: Scotland, England, France, Russia, etc. My go to place is: myheritage.com. I joined the site in 2007 and would get emails from them. I did not read them until a few weeks ago. I sure missed a lot by not reading them. One of my more interesting finds was descending from one of Henry V111’s illegitimate daughters. When I told my daughter, she said there are a lot of us out here. I just read a match today. The genealogist was from Australia. Others have been from different states. Israel, Canada. My great grandmother was an Indian. Her children were offered land in Indian Territory which I think is OK. No one accepted. I knew them as a kid. Genealogy is an interesting hobby.

Not if you have other info that could be used to verify if it is right person... based on his parents/siblings, family info, and maybe ship logs, if they came to America.

I was amazed to find that my Franks’ ancestors were among the first Jews in this country way back in the 1600’s.
