Seems like yesterday.
Yup! In short: He’s dead. 49 years. DEAL with it.
It seems like a lifetime away now but I still remember it well.
It was lunch period and another student, Tim Sutton came up to me and said “the president’s been shot”. This was in a very conservative part of the country, the Florida Panhandle, and within seconds everyone knew.
The first reaction was mostly, relief and happiness, as if Castro had been shot. I noticed a girl who I knew as probably the only Catholic girl in school began to quietly cry.
After maybe 15 minutes, it began to sink in and the mood changed. I recall more than one saying “I am glad he was shot but hope he doesn’t die”.
Later the principal came over the intercom and told us he had died. Everyone by then was in a somber mood and it was clear by then that no one really wanted him to have died.
Well, the next few years, very soon I’d expect, they’ll be trying to hide why our ex-President wasted away looking like he had aids or something (can you say Rock Hudson?).....they’ll blame it on the heart problems.
“It is unfortunate that he became a saint within the Democrat Party even though todays Democrats would drum him out of the party for not being progressive enough.”
They don’t bring up his name too much these days...a tax cutting Hawk Dem...he’d be drummed out of the party. We’ve come a long way into hell, helped by his malignant brother Ded Kennedy (D-HELL) ... that bastard should have gone first.
Sad. But he was VERY rich drug addicted pimp. He couldn’t keep his ying yang inside his pants, even when he was president. His wife wasn’t an idiot. She knew what was going on but liked the money.
I think you’re right about politics then and politics now combined with the fact that our lives were so different when we were in our 20’s and young people in their 20’s now. My now ex-husband and I were having Thanksgiving dinner with my parents and our two children, ages 1 month and 18 months. My parents only had a 12 inch black and white TV and while I remember feeling sad and wondering how such a thing could have happened, it was really just a blip on the screen of our lives at that time.
>>I recommend Killing Kennedy<<
I think it already happened ;)
Heard them on cspan. No there there.
I assume you’re talking about Bubba. He does look like hell doesn’t he?
Lol
Now, I didn’t say which one.
Knock on the door
Flashing lights in the street
Most people forget that at the time Kennedy was shot Goldwater was leading him in all the polls. Kennedy went to Texas to try and swing the state back into his column.
Texas Democrats hated Kennedy. Back then they were more conservative than Rockefeller Republicans.
Sounds like you grew up among total aholes.
Being happy the president was shot but being a bit uncomfortable with his death.
I guess if Libs said they were glad Reagan was shot, that would not have troubled you.
Aholes in every corner of this country, no matter their affiliation.
A recently deceased friend was a young Navy SEAL in the early 60’s and was attached to the CIA during part of his service.
He told me that there were a group of retired servicemen in Florida that were part of the aborted Bay of Pigs invasion and that they got together every year to drink and play poker. This group was planning to airdrop into Cuba at various placed and disable the telecommunications and power grid. Obviously, they never got on the planes as Kennedy choked.
My friend said that the CIA killed Kennedy to let future Presidents know not to mess with the intelligence community.
He said that one member of his group wrote the real story and posted it on the internet.
Here it is:

I was in US Navy Boot Camp San Diego at the time.
Edward Blake. The Comedian. The grassy knoll.
ah...
yeah the O’Reilly-co-written book.
Also Vincent Bugliosi’s Reclaiming History
Makes feel a little "old".
I was only 7 but still have quite vivid memories of that day.
I think Killing Kennedy makes this point:
—bad back, Crohn’s disease etc...he wore a back brace
—without the back brace, his body would have been thrust forward and the second shot might have missed him. With it,
he gets the shot and it’s all over.
IIRC though technically I may mean 2nd and 3rd shots
1st: missed
2nd: went through this throat
3rd: exploded right half of his head
...I am reminded of these lines from
Give the People What they Want by the Kinks
When Oswald shot Kennedy, he was insane
But still we watched the reruns again and again
We all sit rapt while the killer takes aim...
“Hey ma there goes a piece of the President’s brain!”
