It seems like a lifetime away now but I still remember it well.

It was lunch period and another student, Tim Sutton came up to me and said “the president’s been shot”. This was in a very conservative part of the country, the Florida Panhandle, and within seconds everyone knew.

The first reaction was mostly, relief and happiness, as if Castro had been shot. I noticed a girl who I knew as probably the only Catholic girl in school began to quietly cry.

After maybe 15 minutes, it began to sink in and the mood changed. I recall more than one saying “I am glad he was shot but hope he doesn’t die”.

Later the principal came over the intercom and told us he had died. Everyone by then was in a somber mood and it was clear by then that no one really wanted him to have died.

Sounds like you grew up among total aholes.

Being happy the president was shot but being a bit uncomfortable with his death.

I guess if Libs said they were glad Reagan was shot, that would not have troubled you.

Aholes in every corner of this country, no matter their affiliation.

Wow... I guess it’s true, evil idiots on both sides.

The south must have truly sucked then. You know, no matter how much I disagree with Obama/Obummer, never would I be “glad” a fellow human being is shot. AND even more distressing is the fact how young you and your classmates were at the time - proof that “hate” is indoctrinated in children by their parents. It must have been tough to be the "Catholic girl" hearing you idiots gloat about the President being shot...

Humans must evolve so much more for us to have a true chance of peace among one another...Hate and religions make this truly impossible.
