All over America, restlessness and frustration are growing. It has now been almost three years since the great financial crash of 2008, and yet the U.S. economy is still a complete and total mess. In fact, there are all sorts of signs that things are about to get even worse, and the American people are just about fed up. Virtually every major poll, survey and measure of consumer confidence shows that the American people are becoming more pessimistic about the economy. Millions of hard working Americans that worked their fingers to the bone for their employers and that did everything “right” are sitting at home on their couches tonight staring blankly at the television. Many of them still have a hard time believing that they were laid off and that there is nobody out there that wants to give them a good job. There are millions of other Americans that won’t get much sleep tonight because they will spend much of the night rolling around in bed wondering how they are possibly going to be able to pay the mortgage. We have never faced such an extended economic downturn in modern U.S. history, and a lot of people are starting to freak out about the condition of the economy.

An acquaintance of mine was doing very well at a fairly young age, prior to 2008. Only married a couple years, in his late twenties, owned a couple carwashes that had good positive cashflow and several rentals. Had that plus being partner in a residential construction business.
The residential construction went down in ‘08, his partner rapidly got into IRS trouble and tried to leave him holding the bag. He got out of that after considerable worry and expense, tens of thousands to the poorer but still there was the carwash business and the rentals.
The carwashes are now of no value except as a tax writeoff, business held on through ‘08, which was apparently much worse in NC than much of the rest of the US. Held on through ‘09 but slowing, now down to not even breaking even most months. The dollar changers have been broken into three times in the past six months, several thousand dollars. He’d altered his insurance policy to cut expenses. That loss would have been covered previously, but it wasn’t.
Two of his rentals have been hit by copper thieves in between tenants, which have become increasingly difficult to find and increasingly sketchy when he does. Several thousand in damage apiece.
He’d gone in with an inlaw to buy a foreclosure, worked on it himself, paid cash for it so no carrying cost. Was all set to make a 70K profit, the foreclosure was so cheap, but the buyer fell through, couldn’t get financed. Copper thieves again, 4K damages, ruined a brand new heating and AC system, these were rank amateurs, just destroyed things and got very little copper to show for their destruction.
He’s on his last leg financially now, formerly one of those guys who just glowed, you could see that he had success written all over him. I tried to tell him in ‘08 that this was the beginnings of a depression and that I was selling everything I could short of the roof over my head and going to cash, he thought I’d gone off the deep end. Heck, I wondered myself, it had been a hard year or two for me above and beyond, shutting my business down, my beloved dog dying and then my dad.
Saw the guy last week, and he didn’t want to talk about it, really just didn’t want to talk at all. Had like a dark cloud over him, quite the change from the bright presence he once was ... things are not good.
I didn’t have the heart for I-told-you-so.
Its probable that most people won’t take the time to determine the political position of people once things degrade. A percentage of people will determine it based on skin color alone, we see it here unfortunately.

Got a nasty gram from a retirement account manager about round tripping recently. I tipped toed back into a mutual fund and the darn thing went up 10% in a week. Got trigger happy and sold.

FHA.
CRA.
B & C Lenders, Washington Mutual, Countrywide, etc.
All connected with Mortgage Backed Securities (brokers, lawyers, CPAs, Rating Agencies).
The illegal immigrants, who constructed many of the homes for people that would not/could not pay for them.
But instead of letting the mess of late 2008 sort itself out, we got more government sorting out; compliments of both parties.
No action to punish, restrict Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, CRA.
The offending lenders were given to bigger banks, Chase, Band of America, Wells Fargo, etc. They are not serious about loan modifications, and government is not forcing them to be. This harms the recovery, placing more people at risk of losing their homes.
No action against the Officers and directors of offending companies, industries, etc. Nobody has faced charges over this whole mess. This fails to reassure citizens that government enforces aws, or that doing wrong ha consequences.
Obama’s solution was to opportunistically shovel tons of money at government jobs, unions, agencies, beneficiaries, his poor people, etc.
But no shovel ready jobs—the traditional Keynsian approach which used to work, to an extent during normal recessions.
And now with an annual deficit of $1.6+ trillion, Obama offers to cut $100 - 200 billion. And the GOP negotiates on this basis, multiplying by 10 and calling it $2 trillion.
Fed. Gov. spending up 28% since 2008, but rarely or ever hear a demand from the GOP to roll fed gov spending back to 2008—still leaving a deficit, just smaller.
So wtf do the government spending dolars above 2008 levels get us?
The first step toward paying down the cumulative debt is to stop adding to it.
Whenever we hear ten year budget estimates for savings, ask what the savings will be in the FIRST YEAR?
