In todays modern globalist economy, we have relied upon centralized and highly manipulated trade, forced interdependency, senseless and undisciplined consumption, endless debt creation, welfare addiction, and the erosion of quality, as a means to sustain a system that ultimately is DESIGNED to erode our freedoms not to mention our ability to effectively take care of ourselves. We have been infantized by our financial environment. In the near future, those who wish to live beyond a meager staple of government handouts (if any are even given) will be required to make a 180 degree reversal from their current lifestyle of dependency and immediate gratification towards one of self sufficiency, personal entrepreneurship, quality trade, and a mindset of necessity, rather than unfounded excess.
This means that each and every one of us will not only be driven to form barter networks outside the designated confines of the mainstream, we will have to become active producers within those networks. Each and every one of us will need to discover practical goods and skills that will be in high demand regardless of economic conditions. Being that our society has all but forgotten how this kind of trade works, lets examine a short list of items as well as proficiencies that are sure to be highly sought after as the collapse progresses

I am not sure how it would develop. Gold and silver would find their own value in time. You are correct tools would be valuable. That said go to any yard sale and about everyone has some tools and some other useful things meaning that most every household has some basics. Mad Max, not necessarily but I do think areas protected by a group of people banded together with a local leader is possible. If the SHTF event is a mass kill off of humans then things would develop in strange ways. Like I said you have anything you want to trade? Salt, sugar, TP, toothpaste on and on.
Have you seen the movie “The Book of Eli”? Water was the scarce commodity. That puts a whole different spin on what ever happens. I just know that Federal Reserve Notes will not be worth $hit. Read about Argentina. Scary stuff.
Lehman’s is an Amish supply house of sorts. They have a terrific catalog with all kinds of stuff preppers would like.
Thank you. Harbor Freight also has an industrial type sewing machine.
Yes, it’s probably Chinese. But our error-prone, importing, genocidal, outsourcing, off-shoring leadership will depose themselves by their own policies, while we prepare more quickly and buy a little more time to do so.
Some of us are planning to use foreign machines to make custom parts to build American machines. ;-)
It’s true. All we have to do is wait you out. You have to come out sometime.
The key to survivability is mobility.Stocking up a bunch of stuff just means I get a bunch of stuff when you move on or eat a sniper round.
Bump ping
IIRC, the caretaker Washington left in charge of Mount Vernon bought protection for the estate by giving goods to the British. Washington was not pleased.
Here are some of the more serious dangers facing most Americans, IMO.

But for those of us preparing for those kinds of events (and not so much for Helter Skelter) without big government spending and mismanagement, they’ll mean more peace, quiet and prosperity.
Planted in mid-August to September, plants such as kale, the lettuces, chards, turnips, beets, collards, will germinate nicely and grow into winter without bolting, or needing water once the rains come. I consider SF a lot of things, but not PNW. I’ll bet there are hippies turned entrepreneurs that specialize in seeds for the region. Should be a mild enough climate for this practice. Would I depend on the greens? Probably not a good idea, but they supplement fish, fowl and game. And you will have a flourishing green garden when others are planting in the spring...which you should also do. Possible to continue the cycle with plants that go to seed. Also, peas are cold hardy.
