Exactly 150 years after South Carolina became the first state to leave the United States, a group whose purpose is to preserve Confederate history is holding a dance in Charleston.
The NAACP plans to protest Monday night's "Secession Ball." Leaders of the civil rights group have said it makes no sense to honor men who committed treason in order to maintain a system that kept black men and woman in bondage as slaves.
But organizers of the ball say their intention is to honor men who were willing to die to protect their vision of states' rights and what this nation was supposed to be.
The Secession Ball is happening just blocks from where 169 men voted unanimously 150 years ago to leave the United States.
A protest rally is scheduled for 4:30pm at Emanuel AME Church on Calhoun Street and the group will march past the Gaillard Auditorium to Morris Brown AME Church on Morris Street.
Meanwhile, a new historical marker will identify the site where South Carolina delegates signed the Ordinance of Secession. The marker was unveiled Monday in downtown Charleston, where Institute Hall once stood.
The marker identifies what was Charleston's largest pre-Civil War public space, with seats for 3,000 people. It hosted the 1860 Democratic national convention, which split when Southern delegates wanted to adopt a party platform protecting slavery.

Tell it, brother!
I think that Lincoln is, along with Reagan, only a little behind Washington as the best president we’ve ever had while Jeff Davis is competing with Obama and Carter for the title of most incompetent Democrat ever.
I’d rather be a small pimple than a huge festering boil like you vag. Don’t you have some homophobia to go work out?
Thanks, I’ll look that up :)
Not wanting anal astronauts infesting the US Armed forces does not make me homophobic. For instance you probably fornicate with your guitar every night and that behavior, while strange, is no business of mine.
Until today nothing was ever thought of sacrificing to our country's wrongs. For six months we had worked to capture, but our cause being almost lost, something decisive and great must be done. But its failure was owing to others, who did not strike for their country with a heart. I struck boldly, and not as the papers say. I walked with a firm step through a thousand of his friends, was stopped, but pushed on. A colonel was at his side. I shouted Sic semper before I fired. In jumping broke my leg. I passed all his pickets, rode sixty miles that night with the bone of my leg tearing the flesh at every jump. I can never repent it, though we hated to kill. Our country owed all her troubles to him, and God simply made me the instrument of his punishment. The country is not what it was. This forced Union is not what I have loved. I care not what becomes of me. I have no desire to outlive my country. The night before the deed I wrote a long article and left it for one of the editors of the National Intelligencer, in which I fully set forth our reasons for our proceedings. He or the gov'r- After being hunted like a dog through swamps, woods, and last night being chased by gunboats till I was forced to return wet, cold, and starving, with every man's hand against me, I am here in despair. And why? For doing what Brutus was honored for. What made Tell a hero? And yet I, for striking down a greater tyrant than they ever knew, am looked upon as a common cutthroat. My action was purer than either of theirs. One hoped to be great himself. The other had not only his country's but his own, wrongs to avenge. I hoped for no gain. I knew no private wrong. I struck for my country and that alone. A country that groaned beneath this tyranny, and prayed for this end, and yet now behold the cold hands they extend to me. God cannot pardon me if I have done wrong. Yet I cannot see my wrong, except in serving a degenerate people. The little, the very little, I left behind to clear my name, the Government will not allow to be printed. So ends all. For my country I have given up all that makes life sweet and holy, brought misery upon my family, and am sure there is no pardon in the Heaven for me, since man condemns me so. I have only heard of what has been done (except what I did myself), and it fills me with horror. God, try and forgive me, and bless my mother. Tonight I will once more try the river with the intent to cross. Though I have a greater desire and almost a mind to return to Washington, and in a measure clear my name - which I feel I can do. I do not repent the blow I struck. I may before my God, but not to man. I think I have done well. Though I am abandoned, with the curse of Cain upon me, when, if the world knew my heart, that one blow would have made me great, though I did desire no greatness. Tonight I try to escape these bloodhounds once more. Who, who can read his fate? God's will be done. I have too great a soul to die like a criminal. Oh, may He, may He spare me that, and let me die bravely. I bless the entire world. Have never hated or wronged anyone. This last was not a wrong, unless God deems it so, and it's with Him to damn or bless me. As for this brave boy with me, who often prays (yes, before and since) with a true and sincere heart - was it crime in him? If so, why can he pray the same? I do not wish to shed a drop of blood, but 'I must fight the course.' 'Tis all that's left to me. |
Treason? Well they have removed all doubt now. This coming from a bunch of hyphinated Americans communists.
Maybe, maybe not. But crashing and bashing around on the ‘trollin for homo’ threads and attacking anyone who isn’t as simple-minded as you definitely qualifies as homophobic.
So not only was he a monster but he was a drama queen to boot. Nice.
Would Jim Robinson be in that group of the simple minded, as you put it?
California’s going to have to go bankrupt and shed its union benefits liabilities before anything gets better.
I’m all for federalism, but the structure of government has to change to accmoodate new realities. I guess i’m a Burkean conservative in that respect - change is inevitable, and it should be done as cautiously, slowly and unwillingly as possible, with an eye towards keeping what’s best of existing traditions.
As to the central government point - this is a question as to which much ink has been spilled. I don’t think the constitution contemplated secession. I’m sure I don’t have the exact understanding of “the founders” - but given that the founders were riven between federalists and anti-federalists, i’m not sure what understanding you are referring to. For example, looking at what had happened elsewhere, the founding fathers realized the political problems posed by a standing army outside of wartime. The constitutional requirement to re-appropriate funds every two years was initially thought of as a stumbling block for us turning into something like Napoleonic France. I can’t imagine us winning the cold war if we were to have disbanded our standing army ~23 times between 1946 and 1992.
No, they wouldn’t have won. The North had the technology, factories and supply lines and the South had something that the North wanted.
Imho, the Civil War was more about money than anything else. Ending slavery was used as the “cause” and is a great outcome, but ultimately, like every war, it was about power and money.
1. Fear of or contempt for lesbians and gay men.
2. Behavior based on such a feeling.
I do not fear them or their sycophants, I do not alter my behavior because of them, although I have never been around you personally. So I don't fit the definition.
Are you proud of that?
Reagan and Washington, yes; Lincoln, most definitely NO! Jeff Davis was an honorable man, but never should have been elected president of the CSA; he was not up to the task.
The human condition has not changed. Don't confuse a change in technology with a huge change in human psycho-development. The more things change the more they stay the same. To think differently is the statist's snare.
History has shown again and again that a republic is the strongest form of government there is. Why? because it's citizens have more to lose in a war. The CSA started from scratch and formed an Army of 200,000 in 5 weeks. Not bad for a republic.
The main problem with true republic is that they look weaker than they really are and conversely centralized authoritarian governments look stronger than they really are. Leading to war.
