It's been nice weather here.. I think it may be changing for the better.

I talked to Dyan this morning and they still have two feet of snow on the ground. Nothing has melted since the Christmas storm.. Just been added to.. I guess it's nasty there today, but rain, no snow..

When you go to Canyonlands national park, there are three areas. The Needles district is to the southeast of the confluence of the Green and Colorado rivers, the Island in the Sky district is to the north of the confluence, and the Maze district is to the west. The Chocolate drops are one of the landmarks of the Maze district. When you drop into these canyons, you are into 30 square miles of canyons only accessible by foot. The park service describes it as one of the most inaccessable areas in the nation.

In my BYU days we packed in a whole Thanksgiving turkey dinner for twelve people, including a 20 pound raw turkey, and we cooked it below the chocolate drops until we had melted the popup red plastic indicator back into the bird. We took the ingredients for pies and made them from scratch on the bottom, and played for a day among the Anasazi paintings at the bottom. The next day we had a blizzard to beat them all, with wind blowing the snow up the canyon walls. Four days later we came out, and that has always been a special spot.

This picture is taken from the Air, looking south, with the morning sun coming from the left.

Cheers.
