if you find a house that does NOT have a pool, put one in.....immediately........... you'll thank me for this advice......... And if you're anything like TxgirlinPA you'll also need to install a very TALL privacy fence.

Do you have a choice of Houston or Dallas, or just don't know yet? Regardless, it is really impractical to suggest areas to live unless we in know what area you will work. You wouldn't want to work in Clear Lake and live in Katy.
Concealed Carry - Go here and scroll down to SUBCHAPTER H. LICENSE TO CARRY A CONCEALED HANDGUN § 411.171
I've pinged the more active shooters for info on ranges.
We have an active Houston FReeper Chapter and hope you would join us if you make it to Houston.

Simple advice in either case -- stay outside the city limits.
Houston: Katy, Woodlands, Tomball, Magnolia
Dallas: Irving, Richardson, Plano, McKinney, Arlington

If you work in downtown Dallas, check out Kaufman Co. if you like small town living.

For the Houston area, a good rule of thumb is to look at the Congressional Districts.
You don't want to live in Sheila Jackson-Lee's, if you can help it. With some notable exceptions, it's the seedy side of town. Congressmen Brady's, Culberson's, and DeLay's are the desirable areas.
Democrat Gene Green's and Chris Bell's are more mixed.
Funny how that works.

Funny how that works No, it isn't funny.
I was originally in Bill Archer's district when I bought this house in 1979... some very ugly gerrymandering sucked me into Queen Sheila's Domain of Evil. I'm about 7 blocks from Culberson's district.

The Texas Legislature has the opportunity to redistrict Congressional lines this session.
Culberson's district is 90% Republican. We need to redraw it so that it's about 60% Republican, and push some of those voters in Chris Bell's district.
So there's some hope that you could end up with someone other than Queen Sheila as your congresscritter.

Dog,
While we have kids, 1 1/2 currently, the school considerations are not a problem. We're going to homeschool rather than use public school.

Thanks for everyones replies!
My wife I think has already settled on the Dallas area, and as she is pregnant and well armed I don't think I'd better argue!
As to the commute I'll hopefully be working in downtown Dallas. Right now I'm doing 55 miles each way in order to live where we do. I'd like to be closer but I like the small town life. We're kind of looking right now around the Decatur/Rhome area. Any input?
Here's another question for everyone. All of the real estate we've seen online doesn't have a basement. The one realtor we've talked to said it's because of the soil. My question is if you can have an in-ground pool, how come you can't do basements? Living in Kansas it's kind of nice to have a basement when tornadoes come by.

It depends on your job. In Houston, if you work downtown don't live in Katy. Unless you ride the bus, you will never get there, unless you leave at 3:00 in the morning. And that's a straight drive with no turns. The Memorial area is nice; but traffic is really bad everywhere. Katy is pretty nice too and is really growing and the school system I understand is one of the best. I am not sure about the churches; but they do have a couple of new ones out there as well as the should I say regular standbys. Houston is a great place, except for the weather. If you don't suffer from allergies, you will. The weather, other than the traffic, is about the only bad thing in Houston that I can really say. The people are pretty nice and friendly. Oh yeah, the roads are not great. I don't know about the shooting ranges; but I know they exist. What is a CCW permit?

Your comment about Houston weather needs a little clarification. We have some of the best fall, winter & spring weather around, its just the summers that are difficult (& long). Its raining & cold right now but that is not the rule for winter. The D/FW area is nice but their summers are brutal.

My wife I think has already settled on the Dallas area... A shame; as Houstonians are prone to say: "The best thing to ever come out of Dallas was I-45 south"(that would be towards Houston BTW) ; )

My understanding is the water table; dig down about three feet in many areas and you've got your very own water well. A basement would work if you kept it full of water(or lead, like ammo) ; ) I've never seen an empty pool in Texas; I presume it's because they tend to float when drained if not properly anchored...
Welcome to the lone star state; at least in Dallas you'll have something resembling 4 seasons. In Houston there two seasons: winter in January, and summer pretty much the rest of the time(only slight hyperbole).

No, you have never seen weather like Houston. At all times of the year, there is something that is going to cause your allergies to react. You sneeze or cough throughout the year. It's just the nature of the beast. I have never heard anyone really explain it. We also have a lot of rain that makes everything damp.
To: freekitty
Freekitty,
Thanks for the heads up on the allergies, mine have damped down but my wife's are always a problem. Sounds like another nudge to Dallas.
The CCW permit is a permit to carry a concealed handgun. The ability to do that does wonderous things to the crime rate.
With what the firearms laws look like it should be close to Nirvana for my wife and I, we're both firearms junkies!

Not much, mind you, but we still have a little on the ground now. It's melting tho...
Texans brace for cold front - "snow is possible" (yeah, right!)
