My wife I think has already settled on the Dallas area...

A shame; as Houstonians are prone to say: "The best thing to ever come out of Dallas was I-45 south"(that would be towards Houston BTW) ; )

All of the real estate we've seen online doesn't have a basement. The one realtor we've talked to said it's because of the soil. My question is if you can have an in-ground pool, how come you can't do basements?

My understanding is the water table; dig down about three feet in many areas and you've got your very own water well. A basement would work if you kept it full of water(or lead, like ammo) ; ) I've never seen an empty pool in Texas; I presume it's because they tend to float when drained if not properly anchored...

Welcome to the lone star state; at least in Dallas you'll have something resembling 4 seasons. In Houston there two seasons: winter in January, and summer pretty much the rest of the time(only slight hyperbole).

Yeah. We actually got some SNOW yesterday. Not much, mind you, but we still have a little on the ground now. It's melting tho...

Texans brace for cold front - "snow is possible" (yeah, right!)
