I have been thinking lately it would be nice to have a thread (maybe even a forum later?) for the homeschooling families, because you know how many of us there are. This would not replace us pinging each other with all the great articles we find. It would be a place where we could discuss what curriculum we use, vent when needed, share our successes, compare notes, alert each other to cool things we find on the internet, and vent some more. I'm sure we all have found other sites with forums that we use, but since FReepers are such a cool breed, where better to start up a forum? What do you think?

Here is a little package that could be useful for capturing good stuff off of the web to local storage, and later retrieving via keywords!
I have found it useful .

I was just in Staples and they told me that they needed "proof" that I homeschooled! They wanted a card that says I homeschool. Where we live there is no card that is distributed to parents. The laws in AZ are quite lax.

I know when the time comes for my boys to leave the nest, the Lord will provide me with the strength to let them go (and perhaps even the joy at the time although the thought doesn't appeal to me right now!) I had to laugh when I read this because I was just talking with a friend whose going into Senior year daughter is doing the college visit thing this summer. She is about at the end of her rope reminding her of what she should be doing for college applications, etc. She remarked that maybe the Lord prepares us to not be TOO sad they're going away by allowing for this conflict just before they go. I thought that observation was humorous and right on the money! And I reminded her that it makes that first Thanksgiving trip home all the more joyful!

Where we live there is no card that is distributed to parentsDo you belong to any homeschoolers group that provides ID cards? We belong to a Resource Group which arranges field trips, discounts to museum memberships etc. for its members. We got a membership card from them and used it to get discount cards at Borders, etc.
We sent in our letter of intent to homeschool by certified mail with return receipt requested. It is a good thing we did, because we never heard from the School Dept. and that was the only proof we had that they even knew about us. That's all right; the less I hear from them, the better! I'm fixing to send in our letter for this year. I'm hoping the same thing will happen as last year!

I just remind myself of this scripture:
"To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven"
I can't stand to think of being separated from my jedis at this point in their lives, but that is as it should be!

We recently finished Ivanhoe as a family reading project Great idea! We read to the kids every night; even though they are going into the 7th and 9th grades. I was thinking that reading something from the time frame they are studying would be interesting. Right now we're reading "Hunt for Red October", editing on the fly when necessary. They are enjoying it; we had seen the movie last year, but will just have to get it from Netflix again!

Are you a member of HSLDA? That might help. Or you could make your own school letterhead and use it for proof.

When the last child left for college the empty nest was so difficult. After a few months of depression I took a job tutoring learning disabled six year old twins.......that kept me busy!!!
My kids are all 'growed up'.......and oh how I miss them.....every moment of every day.

We have one child...12 year old girl...I don't look forward to her leaving the nest.

Why thank you. It takes a lot to feed a family of 14, you know.

Remember you can only trust the TV dinners if they are still frozen.

That's proven to be hard, with this heat. Oh well, they're all too chubby anyway. Time for a DIET!!!!!

Our kids learned about the calendar and nutritional stuff reading the expiration date and nutritional information off of disgarded frozen food packages during family scavenger outings. The looks on their faces as they realized what the word expires meant was worth all the hard work. A family can get really close sitting in a dumpster mouths full of fries trying on shoes.

Since the laws here are so good, we opted not to become members of HSLDA.

You raise an interesting question. I have never known a homeschooling group in our area that issues cards. I do keep my curriculum receipts.
I was in Borders bookstore a few months back and asked about an educator discount. They refused to issue me one as I did not have proof. I explained our hs laws but that was no help. I then wrote to their corporate office. Borders has a policy that says one must show proof. It can be a publication with one's name/address or a card from a homeschool organization. On the other hand, Barnes and Noble was much friendlier to deal with.

If you are in a support group in your area, you might think about creating your own membership cards! You can design and print them from any computer! I'm sure they all have run into the problem of 'proof' of homeschooling. This eliminates the need to carry around a magazine or proof of purchase of supplies with you wherever you go. And once you have an 'educator's discount card with one major place, maybe others will be more willing to give you one.
