Whether you work in an office or from home, you're likely familiar with the after-lunch slump that makes you reach for another coffee or a soda.
If you've front-loaded a lot of caffeine in the morning, this is typically the time you would feel a crash. Eating a large meal or not drinking enough water can also lead to that sluggish feeling.
There's nothing wrong with reaching for a pick-me-up at this time of day, though a short walk or refilling your water bottle is the healthiest option. But if your personal favorite afternoon treat is a Diet Coke, an updated study from the peer-reviewed journal Neurology presents some new data you're going to want to see.
The study's newest findings present a concerning link between low- and no-calorie sweeteners (LNCS) used in diet drinks and accelerated cognitive decline.
In a pool of 12,772 Brazilian participants tested over eight years, people younger than age 60 who consumed LNCS regularly showed a faster decline in verbal fluency and global cognition. The studied LNCS included aspartame, saccharin, acesulfame k, erythritol, xylitol, sorbitol, and tagatose.
Six of the seven sweeteners showed a link to cognitive decline, with tagatose being the one that did not.
People below age 60 who consume artificial sweeteners regularly showed a faster decline in verbal fluency and global cognition.
Participants were tested at the beginning, middle, and end of the study to track changes and then separated into three groups based on consumption levels.
The highest consumption level group showed a cognitive decline 62% faster than that of the lowest group. However, those over 60 did not show an association between LNCS and cognitive decline.

I’ve never tried an artificial sweetener that didn’t taste extremely weird and unpleasant.
People said I had to try this one or that one which was supposed to be much better.. but to me they are all awful and nothing at all like sugar (which I love).
If I’m accidentally given a diet drink or something I want to spit it out - it’s that bad.
I realize refined sugar is bad for me - but it seems my only option if I want to be healthier is to curb my sugar intake - I’m not going to find a substitute.
Is not just sugar either - fake flavors, fake aromas, meat substitutes - you name it - I don’t tend to find them at all convincing or remotely attractive.
As always: Do wet sidewalks cause rain?
People, on the whole, drink diets soda because they have weight issues, and obesity and diabetes are both strongly linked to dementia and cognitive problems.
So...do people struggling with issues that ALSO CREATE RISK FOR COGNITIVE LOSS drink more diet soda, creating a link that might cause unthinking people to think wet sidewalks cause rain?
Trump drinks diet Coke (a lot of it). Let’s grant a study to any one who can show diet Coke has a detrimental affect on the brain. One good thing is woke Coke is the only one who will really suffer from people drinking their product now that this study is out.
Congratulations. I am a sweet addict. The older I get, the more so I become. But I stick with the natural sweeteners such as stevia and monk fruit which do not raise blood sugar. So there's that.
Hell of a thing to be sitting here this morning with my once daily Diet Coke and seeing this article. I just told my wife to put me back on Mountain Dew!
I’ve got to wonder if this was aimed at President Trump? Being almost his age, cognitive decline is a real concern since it might drop a 150+ I.Q. to just brilliant. LOL
“My weight problem is from “oat sodas”.
Is that kin to a barley pop?
And here my grandad thought it was the vodka in his morning coffee.
why not? great thought to junk science
No.
It is a way to validate and justify the left’s delusion that Trump suffers from Cognitive Decline.
So ... what is Sloe-Joe’s excuse?
I was going to post as you did, but you did better.
Cause - Effect, who knows?
Yep. Back in the day we also referred to it as “steak in a can”. 😁
It seems that many did not pay attention to this line in the article:
“People below age 60 who consume artificial sweeteners regularly showed a faster decline in verbal fluency and global cognition.”
The link between consumption and cognitive decline was not found among people older than 60. So, there is no reason for people older than 60 to care about this article.
The horror! The other half will go flat.
So basically, diet soda makes people fat and stupid.
How about this old tried-and-true? That's not him, it's a double. He was executed in (insert year here)". That covers all bases nicely.
A concerning link between low-cal and no-cal sweeteners
(LNCS) in diet sodas and accelerated cognitive decline:
Among 12,772 Brazilians tested over eight years, people younger than age 60
consuming LNCS showed a faster decline in verbal fluency and global cognition.
Culprit LNCS included aspartame, saccharin, acesulfamek, erythritol,
xylitol, sorbitol, showed a link to cognitive decline. Tagatose did not.
None of that sound any good for you...I well remember my doctor telling me years about to avoid asparame b/c it form formaldehyde in the brain.
"Aspartame breaks down into methanol, which is subsequently metabolized into formaldehyde and formic acid in various tissues, including the brain and retina."
Glad I don't like any of it - but know plenty of people who drink Diet Coke by the gallon.
Hold muh soda, Diet what did you say?
Sadly, they substituted the “physically dead” with the “brain dead”.
But, yah, there is some sense of “Campaign Trail” Biden was offt and the pliable idiot was flown in on an unmarked CIA jet.
Yet ... no one recalls, do they?
Proof Of Live for Max Yearick please!
I can attest to this. My daughter's gff drinks copious amounts of diet cola, and she has absolutely no cognition of anything on the globe.
