Kia recalling almost 463,000 Tellurides that may catch fire while being driven or parked, agency says

Kia America is recalling almost 463,000 Telluride midsize crossover SUVs from the 2020-2024 model years that could catch fire while being driven or parked, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says.

The front power seat motor may overheat due to a stuck power seat slide knob or an improper repair during a prior recall, and the result could be a fire while the vehicles are being driven or parked, the agency says.

As a result, the NHTSA is advising owners of the affected Tellurides to park outdoors and away from structures until the latest recall repair is done.

Dealers will install an electronic fuse assembly free of charge, the agency says, adding that letters notifying owners about the issue are expected to be mailed on Aug. 13.

“> The front power seat motor may overheat… <”

My wife would consider that a wonderful option. She loves her heated seats. She had a loaner car last week with a heated steering wheel and she was on the verge of selling her six month old car to get a newer model with the heated steering wheel. I think she was kidding.

I’ve been in a couple of rentals on vacation. They were very nice.

They've GOTTEN nice over the past decade.

Before that, they were junk.

When I was in Germany and other parts of Europe in 2000, I saw cars with specialty model names like Memphis or New Orleans Edition. To the Europeans I guess those names sound exotic..................

Na its a feature.
Imagine you are winter camping...
A sudden fire might be a good thing.

Memphis, not so much.

I can see the mystique in “New Orleans.” A lot of legend there.

Interestingly I read an article years ago where some guy tried to replicate Nader’s claims about the Corvair and couldn’t do so. My cousin had one and really liked it and didn’t experience any of Nader’s claims.

That’s one reason I prefer older cars. No power windows. No power seats. No computer gizmos. Just reliable transportation.

Unfortunately, older cars are much less reliable than modern cars in many ways which matter. Their engines are less reliable, their drive trains are less reliable.

However, as you posit, add a lot of computer gismos and overall reliability goes down. Your bluetooth connection may not work. Your ability to give voice commands to your radio may not work. Your overall media system may have numerous glitches.

That is where the “unreliability” of modern vehicles comes from, the huge increase in the numbers of software dominated systems which transform a vehicle into a media dominated space away from home.

I truly believe car makers have forgotten how to make cars.

Cars of the 80’s and 90’s are far more dependable than new cars today.

Actually, they haven’t forgotten anything. They are deliberately and purposefully building crap so buyers spend more money on repairs and are forced to buy new cars in 4-5 years because the old ones are irreparable.

We Americans need to quit buying into their trickery. Keep your 20 year old cars. Spending $60,000 for a car that spends most of it’s time in a shop waiting on parts that are on back order is insane.

Next thing you’ll be telling me that older women are much less reliable than modern women in many ways which matter.

Not sure if I’ll buy that.

If you can obtain the parts.

Because people didn’t understand that a Corvair’s front tire and back tire inflation levels differed, I was able to pick one up for a song.

Thank you, Mr. Nader!
