Eating a high-quality plant-rich diet that includes whole grains, vegetables, and fruits may prevent cognitive impairment — even when people start that diet in their late 50s and 60s, according to a new study.
"It's never too late to start eating healthy to lower the risk of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias," said senior author Unhee Lim, a professor of population sciences at the University of Hawaii Cancer Center in Honolulu, in an email. Older adults who cut many unhealthy foods from their diet over a decade had a 11% lower risk of Alzheimer's and dementia when compared with adults whose diets didn't change, Lim said.
However, people who increasingly ate more unhealthy plant-based options, such as refined grains and foods with added sugars, were about 25% more likely to develop some type of dementia at the end of 10 years, she said.

“At least I know the cows I’m eating can’t transmit dementia.”
Actually...read up on Mad Cow, but thankfully not an issue these days.
More bullcrap.
My mother has dementia. She lived on fruit and veggies and salads. It was her mantra “eat your fruit and veggies!”.
We have no clue what causes dementia in the elderly. NO. CLUE.
There is more than one factor to most conditions. Not everyone who smokes gets emphysema or lung cancer, and some who don’t smoke do get it.
I’ve read lately that deer are getting the dementia disease. Soured my taste for venison.
I love steak tartar and was eating every chance I got while living in Europe the center of the outbreak. I got lucky. I quit eating steak tartar but since the disease has almost been eliminated I do eat it again. It is delicious.
I’ve been improving my eating. More veggies and good protein. I finally kicked the pastries that were my Sirens’ call. Yay!
So we should be eating trees? Sauted in butter with a touch of Vermouth?
I heard Euell Gibbons had a recipe book
Wish I hadn’t read that, totally wrecked my appetite. Bananas already require a BARF ALERT. IF they have miraculously become berries, it’s the devil’s work. No more berries for me in any form whatsoever. I’d rather eat a cactus.
Plaque on the brain. What causes that is a conundrum
Here we go with the whole grains crap again.
You think they are unfairly blaming grains?
Thank you...I go now.
