The leader of a trade group that represents most major automakers called on the federal government to eliminate its gasoline tax and replace it with a vehicle fee to finance road infrastructure needs.
Alliance for Automotive Innovation CEO John Bozzella, whose group represents automakers such as General Motors, Toyota, Volkswagen, Hyundai and other leading car manufacturers, put forward a proposal that urged the federal government to address the growing shortfall in the Highway Trust Fund with a vehicle fee.
The proposal would function like a vehicle registration fee that’s assessed on all vehicles based on their weight, and was first reported by Reuters. It comes as the federal government’s current surface transportation law is set to expire on September 30, which could prompt debate over policy changes.
“This policy would guarantee every vehicle on the road contributes something to maintaining America’s transportation network,” Bozzella said. “Those driving older, less fuel-efficient vehicles or who travel long distances bear the financial burden. That’s not fair.” …

It takes heavy vehicles to move our economy. Lower road fuel tax for their light weight high usage cars you say?
Let’s not reward these road flitters who, in our way all day long, are using up gasoline at suppressed prices while we provide for their life styles at yet lowered costs that they do not even pay for?
Buy beer and lottery tickets out of my sight not AM and in my way of getting to work!
Do you spend all day, cherry picking and anklebiting, to come up with the exceptions that prove the rule?
A reply to your false post.
Exactly.
We all pay for the road maintenance via gas taxes!
But the heaviest EV’s who made most of the road damage get free pass!
The biggest “advantage” of EV is that they use electricity, which is not taxed (too much) while we use gas and diesel, both taxed quite a lot.
If that tax advantage went away, nobody would buy EV!
Tesla 3: 3700 pounds?
That’s the smallest Tesla with short range option.
Most Tesla’s run around 5000+ pounds!
And all Tesla’s are puny.
Comparable size gas cars with a lot large range run like 2500-3000 lb.
Well, I don’t think I want to do away with big trucks. I kinda think we’d all starve, in short order.
If you talking vehicle weight,
Caterpillar 793 mine hauling truck weights 295,098 lb.
Fully loaded almost 900,000 lb.
Now you can compare your Tesla to something!
But those trucks do not run on public roads!
I wish the ev fees were as high as what I have paid for my ice vehicles, AI notwithstanding.
That should kill the sale of electric vehicles. Ford electric pickup = 6,015 to 6,893 pounds. F 150 regular cab gasoline 2 wheel drive - 4,021 pounds. So add annual taxes for a ton or so of extra weight.
Is it a old scheme then?
You know they are scheming one way or another.
How ‘bout just replacing it with a 44 ounce huge gulp weight tax?
That would be great for my 15 mpg sports car.
Weight plus mileage would do the trick.
As long as the gasoline tax was repealed entirely.
EV’s, gasoline fueled and diesel vehicles would be taxed on an equal basis.
Heck, in a display of good faith, I’ll even call for taxing bicycles on the same basis: weight plus mileage. Of course, to do that fairly, we’d have to add bike lines (or at least wide shoulders) to all highways. If done fairly, I’m sure the cycling community would lend its enthusiastic support. As a simplifying matter, people could just pay a $10 tax upfront at the time of purchase and not fool with annually tracking mileage. And that would probably be overpaying ....:)
Did anyone ever teach you any manners at all?
Ever?

How about privatizing the interstates and putting maintenance of other roads back to the states? Any progressive taxation comes from the Communist Manifesto.
Y'know, because electric cars are heavier.
The real damage from vehicle weight is from trucks. Cars, even EVs, are a nothingburger.
But there is also damage from hot cold cycling and water/ice. Everyone should pay some.
“There wouldn’t be such a shortfall if the ev’s paid their “fair share”.”
Texas has a $400 first time and $200 per year EV road fee.
My former S60 got 28 mpg Hwy I drove 15,000 miles per year that’s 535 gallons worth of fuel at 28mpg
[As of April 2026, the combined Texas state and federal tax on gasoline is 38.4 cents per gallon. This includes the fixed Texas state gasoline tax of 20 cents per gallon and the federal excise tax of 18.4 cents per gallon.]
535x0.384=$205 in taxes including federal taxes
Just Texas gas tax would have been $107 so Texas is charging twice what the a person would pay driving an average of 15,000 miles per year in Texas in a 5 passenger sedan.
A 2026 Camry hybrid all Camry are hybrids now gets 51mpg combined the same person who drives the average American mileage which is 14,500 not 15 would pay
14,500/51=284 gallons
285 gallons X 20 cents TX state gas tax.. $56.86 per year in gas taxes.
Fed tax is 18.4 cents
So 284x18.4= $52.31
If you think $56 in state tax and 52 in federal taxes covers even a single foot of roadway you are a certified idiot.
It’s just math bros. Remember the average person doesn’t go more than 14,500 miles in a year.
Even my Expedition 4x4 gets 24Hwy/18city so 21 combined city heavy.
14500/21= 290 gal
290galx20cents Texas gas tax = $138
Again Texas charges all EVs $200 per year we are already paying more than what the avg driver contributes.
Math it’s universal.
