Auto industry trade group urges feds to scrap gas tax and replace it with a vehicle weight fee

The leader of a trade group that represents most major automakers called on the federal government to eliminate its gasoline tax and replace it with a vehicle fee to finance road infrastructure needs.

Alliance for Automotive Innovation CEO John Bozzella, whose group represents automakers such as General Motors, Toyota, Volkswagen, Hyundai and other leading car manufacturers, put forward a proposal that urged the federal government to address the growing shortfall in the Highway Trust Fund with a vehicle fee.

The proposal would function like a vehicle registration fee that’s assessed on all vehicles based on their weight, and was first reported by Reuters. It comes as the federal government’s current surface transportation law is set to expire on September 30, which could prompt debate over policy changes.

“This policy would guarantee every vehicle on the road contributes something to maintaining America’s transportation network,” Bozzella said. “Those driving older, less fuel-efficient vehicles or who travel long distances bear the financial burden. That’s not fair.” …

California has a new scheme. They tax the S**T out of your house if it is far away from the city. It's a penalty for daring to live away from the squalor of big cities and is directly tied to the distance that you would need to drive to those cities. It's a double penalty because you are going to be hit with gasoline taxes and vehicle mileage taxes on top of this new, imaginary vehicle mileage tax on your shelter. It is assessed even if you don't own a vehicle.

They've been working on that real estate racket for fifteen to twenty years. I predicted it in my first book, Natural Process, 25 years ago, described as "The Squeeze," as incorporated into planning processes in the mid 90s pursuant to the UN Agenda 21.

Cars and even very heavy SUVs do very little damage. It is the heavy trucks.

So people and companies working will pay a much heavier, progressive tax.
No. Get rid of it altogether.

For cryin’ out loud, if these grifting corrupt states and federal agencies would HONESTLY monitor the cash they dole out we all would get a check yearly just for being alive and an American citizen. Think about it...anyone with multiple cars/trucks etc... would pay for vehicles that might not be used except for part time? The gas/fuel tax at pump collects it as it is utilized. With lobbyists such as this group is exactly how crap legislation makes its way to congress...The fact that states and feds don’t treat our money like its coming out of their own pockets is the only reason the fraud and theft of public funds occurs. Screw this scam.

You have to love any Collectivists trying to start a new tax. I can hardly wait for WWI to end so the temporary Income Tax can be repealed.

“There wouldn’t be such a shortfall if the ev’s paid their “fair share”.”

AI Overview
Arizona EV registration fees are generally higher than gas vehicles due to a $135 annual “alternative fuel” surcharge intended for road maintenance, added on top of standard registration fees. While gas vehicles pay a lower, value-based license tax, EVs registered after 2022 face higher assessed value calculations, often totaling over $100 more annually.

I wonder if any highway funds are diverted to Learing Center type scams. I doubt any government funded project is without corruption.
