Cars and even very heavy SUVs do very little damage. It is the heavy trucks.

Exactly.
We all pay for the road maintenance via gas taxes!
But the heaviest EV’s who made most of the road damage get free pass!
The biggest “advantage” of EV is that they use electricity, which is not taxed (too much) while we use gas and diesel, both taxed quite a lot.
If that tax advantage went away, nobody would buy EV!

The real damage from vehicle weight is from trucks. Cars, even EVs, are a nothingburger.

But there is also damage from hot cold cycling and water/ice. Everyone should pay some.
