January 2026 Snow Storm

Posted on 01/22/2026 5:14:26 PM PST by Jamestown1630

Nobody seems to have begun a thread for the snowstorm that is forecast for this weekend, so I thought I would.

Where I live (DC Metro area) a big snowstorm is relatively rare. We're the ones who don't really know how to drive in it because we don't get a lot of practice; and we also crowd the grocery store and wipe out the shelves - often for stuff we don't really need, and for a forecast that doesn't amount to much but flurries.

But once in a while, we really get whacked; and I think this may be one of those times. (My husband grew up in the wilds of Pennsylvania, and laughs at what we consider 'getting whacked' down here.)

I'm hoping we get lots of snow, and little or no ice; and hope everyone will be safe.

Let us know what you are doing to prepare, if you live where it might hit.

We didn’t have snow days when I was growing up. Maybe hurricane days.

But we had cinnamon toast and hot tea very often, not just during storms.

It got pretty cold back in the 80’s a d 90’s, not so much anymore. We’re expecred to get to maybe -5 in the next week. I used to work outside in -20 regularly doing carpentry work, then logging- it was the wind chill thouhg that rea.ly got to me after awhile. Used to hunt in hose conditions, and as long ax i kept moving, i was fine. Used to like the challenge of the weather- i musta froze my brain or somethin lol.

My dad used to have to shovel coal too, and haul in ths drinkin water for the day for the school. Was a small school, one room. Was still standing a few years ago, not sure,if it still is. The last 2 room school bui, ding in the area.

Lol we didnt eaither. I remember wakingmup, and there would be like 2-3 feet of snow, and us kids would all be sittin by the window, radio playing, waiting to hear our school named, but it never did almost. Some of the more remote areas got the day off, but not us lol. We’d have tO trudge about a 1/2 mile to our bus stop through the snow, which was deep for small kids like us. The bus would come barreling down the road, snow flyin everywhere, znd wed get on the bus sulkin lol.

My husband doesn’t understand why entire counties here close for snow; in PA when he was growing up, specific schools closed but not whole county systems.

I guess it’s because we’re a very metropolitan area with more people and traffic, more schools; but that doesn’t satisfy him.

In 2009 we got 2” around here (actually 1.9” at our place, but higher nearby.) That was followed by a week of very cold weather. Not fun.

I am an US citizen who lives in Atlantic Canada, married a Canadian .

This storm is a big deal. My step son runs a line construction company, they already have been called out on an emergency basis and will be leaving early tomorrow morning ( Friday 23 January) to Arkansas, and they will travel in 40 truck convoy to get there.Their top speed is about 55 mph ( bucket trucks etc), a long slow trip. They will have 60 linemen.

This is going to be a bad storm.

I hope they will be safe. We rely on people who are willing to do these hard jobs, and are very grateful for them.

You didn’t look for an overblown title. ;-)

That said, this IS a significant storm, and it will likely take at least a few lives...

Anybody know where the highest ice accumulations are likely to be?

North Mississippi. 1994.
I was ten years old back then but remember it clearly. We were lucky, though. Only three days without power because our circuit powered the community water well for water supply, and it was a priority to get that up and running.

Some neighbors were less so. I have relatives that were without power for 21 days. It was an absolutely devastating ice storm for the area.

For the past three days I’ve been hearing echoes of 1994. That’s normal with every snow or ice event. Less common is when the more serious weather people are talking that way. Those conversations began to float today from them.

Needless to say, we good folks in north Mississippi covet your prayers for the next few days.

We are to get a lot for Pittsburgh. 2010 was last time it snowed more than 10 inches in one day. I went to grocery & bought food as I was low. Walking the dog will be fun as if it snows what they say it may. Hope ice is at minimum everywhere in USA.

Yeah, I don’t know what is going on with that. I buy less bread any more, but when I do buy, it’s Dave’s. Or one of those big Parmesan loafs in the Costco bakery.

"We started ‘prepping’ during the Obama years, so we’ve usually got food to tide us over. But the one thing we forget is extra water for flushing. This time, I think we’ve got enough."

Can't you use snow in the winter?

(I'm assuming you have a home not an apartment)
