January 2026 Snow Storm

Posted on 01/22/2026 5:14:26 PM PST by Jamestown1630

Nobody seems to have begun a thread for the snowstorm that is forecast for this weekend, so I thought I would.

Where I live (DC Metro area) a big snowstorm is relatively rare. We're the ones who don't really know how to drive in it because we don't get a lot of practice; and we also crowd the grocery store and wipe out the shelves - often for stuff we don't really need, and for a forecast that doesn't amount to much but flurries.

But once in a while, we really get whacked; and I think this may be one of those times. (My husband grew up in the wilds of Pennsylvania, and laughs at what we consider 'getting whacked' down here.)

I'm hoping we get lots of snow, and little or no ice; and hope everyone will be safe.

Let us know what you are doing to prepare, if you live where it might hit.

And the bread isle is empty here in Kentucky. It’s amazing how people forget that they’re allergic to gluten during a snow scare. 😵‍💫😂🤣

I kinda miss the old days where the “warning” was never issued.

Had to bust up stumps at 2am because the oil line cracked.
I could not handle more than 30min at a time.

Knoxville, Jan 1985. -24F (That is cold)

The shelves are bare in our Walmart. All the toilet paper is gone.

Good call. We’re in Maryland and my 91-yo mother is a few miles away in a senior independent living facility. Went over today to make sure she was squared away including that she had extra blankets nearby her in case power went out and all she had to do was reach over and grab a few.

LOL.

We had cinnamon toast a lot; but I only remember having it with hot tea on snow days.

I can never seem to make the toast just like my Granny did, though; I think it’s because her gas oven did it just right. Since then, I’ve had electric ovens that just don’t seem to work the same way.

That is cold for knoxville. In northeast, back in the 80’s i used to go ice fishing at -35 (had 3 weeks of it) and with wind chill i imsgine it was quite a bit colder. I had an eddie bower down filled coat with hood, good gloves, ok boots, and one of those old woodchopper hats with the ear flaps lol. I was quite a sight. Would sit on the bucket wit back to the wind for hours, snug as bug in a rug. I only had a hand auger, so that would work up some heat.

Now thouhg, it gets below +40 and im shiverin lol

We learned to approach to toilet paper during Covid. Since then, I keep a stack that reaches the bathroom ceiling.

It rarely amounts to much here in KY, but we’ve got all shopping done so we can stay at home. We have a standby generator, lots of video. I changed the oil in the snow blower, and have my insulated coveralls at the ready. I’d much rather it’s a fizzle!

I’m in Northern Illinois. We are going to have brutal cold the next couple of days. Fine with me. I’ve been to Southern California. NICE PLACE to visit, but I sure wouldn’t want to live there. Enjoy your cocktails- in fact, have one for me while you’re at it.🍸🙂

Somewhere a grocery store manager just whispered ‘it’s time’ and unlocked the French toast supplies

@dreamwideawaken
As a former Kroger manager - no they aren’t. They’re hiding in the produce cooler, trying to not cry 🤣. Snow scare shopping was worst than the holidays and we HATED it.

My nephew eats it like its going out of style. Eats it plain, not tossted. Will finish off a loaf in 2 days. His stomach is a bottomless pit when it comes to cinnamon bread lol

I live in So.CA and many years ago a friend was living in Apple Valley. He started talking to Roy Rogers and Roy said he traveled the world and SO. CA. has the best weather.

The wonder I love is the lack of any real forcast.
Being a kid in the 60’s and 70’s with TV was awesome.
Nobody got a school report until 6am.

I had to shovel coal in my elementary school. Janitor was exhausted in below zero days.

Charged up 7 Bluetti AC180 solar generators
Brought in 45gal of drinking water
Got 20gals of diesel for my diesel heaters
Filled the car with gas.
Got some necessities at the local store.
Went to my sister in laws and charged and set up her solar generator

And prayed for good weather.
