Chemical companies and their trade organizations argue that the EPA cannot reevaluate hazardous air pollution rules to account for newly discovered harms if it has already revised the rules once. It doesn’t matter if decades have passed or new information has emerged.
Ethylene oxide was once considered an unremarkable pollutant. The colorless gas seeped from relatively few industrial facilities and commanded little public attention.

All that changed in 2016, when the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) completed a study that found the chemical is 30 times more carcinogenic than previously thought.
The agency then spent years updating regulations that protect millions of people who are most exposed to the compound. In 2024, the EPA approved stricter rules that require commercial sterilizers for medical equipment and large chemical plants to slash emissions of ethylene oxide, which causes lymphoma and breast cancer.
It was doing what the EPA has done countless times: revising rules based on new scientific knowledge.
Now, its ability to do that for many air pollutants is under threat.

Congress members were to have unrestricted access to federal detention facilities as part of their oversight duties before the notice was issued.
Noem’s memo reads: “The basis for this policy is that advance notice is necessary to ensure adequate protection for Members of Congress, congressional staff, detainees, and ICE employees alike. Unannounced visits require pulling ICE officers away from their normal duties. Moreover, there is an increasing trend of replacing legitimate oversight activities with circus-like publicity stunts, all of which creates a chaotic environment with heightened emotions.”

Dipu Chandra Das, who was a worker at a garment factory, was forced to resign and was handed over to an angry mob after he was accused of hurting religious sentiments of Islamists. It had been alleged that he made a derogatory remark against Prophet Muhammad in a Facebook post. Despite lacking proof of the allegation, the mob beat him to death. Thereafter, the miscreants tied his body to a tree and set it ablaze.

An attack on a church in Aleppo, Syria, was foiled on New Year’s Eve by security services. However, a soldier was killed in the incident, which will likely exacerbate the fears of many Syrian Christians going into the new year.
According to Open Doors sources, security forces noticed a man acting suspiciously around a church close to Farhat Square. As they sought to stop him, the man started shooting and detonated a bomb belt, killing himself and a soldier, and wounding two others.

It’s believed that IS, or groups linked to IS, wanted to carry out attacks on churches and public gatherings during celebrations for the new year.
