In 1600 an ancestor (on mymother;s side) was burned at the stake in Massachusetts for being a Quaker. She lived in Rhode Island where there was religious freedom but risked going to Massachusetts.
Interestestingly, also in 1600 another relative (father’s side I believe) was burned at the stake in Merry Old England for being the wrong religion (either Catholic or Protestant, which ever was “wrong” at the time).
Patrick Henry’s grandfather was my ancestor’s grandfather. We are first cousins many times removed (I forget how many - maybe 11?). My family settled on the James River on a land grant from the King in the 1630s (their home was Bremo) and my direct ancestor was Sheriff of Henrico County in the late 1600s. My great aunt did a lot of research into our family history, but she never submitted her papers to the DAR.
